Apple may not have a formal presence at CES, but the company still made something of a splash at the conference in a roundabout way. In something of a surprise move, Apple in recent months apparently struck deals with top TV manufacturers — including Sony and LG — to bring AirPlay 2 support to new HDTV models.

What’s more, Apple inked a particularly intriguing deal with Samsung that will see Samsung’s 2019 HDTV lineup ship with an iTunes app that will allow users to buy or rent movies and TV shows directly from Apple. Some of Samsung’s 2018 HDTVs will also be able to support iTunes downloads once Samsung rolls out a firmware update.

Life expectancy in the United States may be experiencing a bit of a dip as of late, but cancer isn’t the culprit. That’s one big takeaway from a new study published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians today, and the data shows that cancer death rates have been on the decline since 1991.

By tracking deaths attributed to cancer over the past few decades the researchers were able to determine that the rate of cancer deaths in 2016 was an incredible 27% lower than it was in 1991. The study says that those figures translate into roughly 2.6 million fewer cancer deaths over that time period.

The unending saga of Android malware didn’t end in 2018. Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro reported late last week that spyware disguised as legitimate apps on the Google Play store has been gathering data from unsuspecting Android users. In fact, researchers say the spyware (MobSTSPY) has been downloaded “over 100,000 times from users all over the world” in 196 countries.

Trend Micro specifically cited six apps that were available on Google Play as being infected, including cloned games such as Flappy Birr Dog and Flappy Bird, as well as a flashlight app and a couple of emulators. According to Trend Micro, all six apps had been removed from Google Play by the time they shared their report.

Here’s as good an indication as any about how dramatically the pendulum is swinging the other way when it comes to consumers abandoning expensive cable packages for streaming TV options. Remember how we told you back in November that cable and satellite TV providers had just suffered their worst quarter ever in terms of subscribers losses? Turns out, some of those cord-cutters apparently departed for Hulu, which in 2018 added 8 million subscribers to push its overall total past 25 million — making the service now bigger than Comcast, which is of course the biggest cable company in the US.
