Nike just unveiled a pair of self-lacing shoes that you can control with an app
Ever since I saw Michael J. Fox using those self-lacing shoes as Marty McFly in Back to the Future back when I was a kid, I’ve wanted to see that kind of technology in action.
Needless to say, I’ve had to tie my shoelaces manually thousands of times until the technology became available. And when it did launch, it was pretty expensive. But Nike has a more affordable pair of self-lacing shoes out right now, which have nothing to do with those Back of the Future gimmicks. The new Nike Adapt BB have smart features built-in, which are meant to improve the performance of athletes when it matters most.

Judge’s ruling forbids police from forcing suspects to unlock their phones with biometrics
It was only a few months ago, towards the end of 2018, that we heard about a novel method that law enforcement officials were using to break into suspects’ phones. In the case of an iPhone X owned by a 28-year-old suspect caught up in a child abuse investigation that was protected by Apple’s Face ID technology, the feds after raiding the suspect’s home just … held up the phone and demanded he look at it so the device would unlock. The suspect did so, which allowed the feds to poke through his online chats, photos and more.

Watch these researchers show how easy it is to hack construction cranes
It might sound like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster — hackers getting into position behind a control panel and taking over a construction site, using the equipment there to wreak large-scale havoc. Unfortunately, in a new paper published today by researchers Federico Maggi and Marco Balduzzi, it’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.
Indeed, the researchers who work at cybersecurity firm Trend Micro are sounding the alarm about how vulnerable construction cranes are to hackers who might want to cause mischief and destruction, with the video above walking through some of the finer points about how it’s done.

Is this what Apple’s first foldable phone will look like?
Samsung has a huge year ahead when it comes to new smartphone launches, as the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy F on February 20th. The Galaxy S10 series will be the main moneymaker for the company this year, but the foldable phone is also essential for the company, considering all the hype around it right now. We’ve got billboards in Paris, as well as reports from Korea driving home the same point, that the Galaxy F — commercial name pending — is a breakthrough device, one that signals Samsung isn’t done innovating in the mobile landscape. Samsung, of course, wants to set the tone when it comes to new smartphone form factors, just as it did with the Note series years ago.
But this time around, competitors will be quick to launch foldable devices of their own, with Apple, Microsoft, Huawei, LG, and Xiaomi being a few of the companies rumored to be developing such devices. Apple is the most secretive of the bunch, and we have no idea when a foldable iPhone will be ready for mass consumption. 2019 iPhones are largely expected to resemble last year’s models when it comes to overall design, and a new iPhone design isn’t expected until 2020. A report did say that the first foldable iPhone will launch next year… but we may already have an idea of what Apple’s foldable phone could look like.

NBCUniversal’s CEO just made it clear Netflix may not keep ‘The Office’ much longer
NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke gave an interview to Deadline on Monday that Netflix’s top brass may have regarded as a shot across the bow. In that interview, Burke walked through some of the details related to the free streaming TV service that his media conglomerate — which owns MSNBC, CNBC, Syfy, USA Network and more — plans to launch next year. Another day, another media company rolling out a subscription offering.
It’s starting to be a familiar story at this point. This one has an interesting twist, though. Thanks to the Deadline interview, it’s clear that NBC’s top brass wants the new offering to be the future streaming home for The Office, the beloved sitcom the network hopes to wrench away at last from Netflix.

‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners hate trailers, but they’ll release one for season 8 anyway
Now that the dust has settled and the excitement has died down a bit from the Sunday night reveal that Game of Thrones is returning April 14 for the start of its eighth and final season, the next milestone that fans are awaiting is when the heck we’ll get a full, genuine trailer for the new season. Sunday night, of course, gave us a brief teaser of new footage, and there were also snippets of new footage in HBO’s 2019 highlights reel it showed earlier this month — but we’re talking about a longer actual trailer that serves to amp up the excitement level around the new season even more.

The biggest competition for Samsung’s foldable Galaxy phone might come from an unexpected place
Samsung’s first foldable smartphone is confirmed to launch in the first half of the year, and the handset won’t have that many rivals, as other vendors are yet to unveil their own foldable devices. But just because Samsung may not have that many competitors at first won’t guarantee the success of the Galaxy F, which is what we’re calling the device for the time being. Samsung’s biggest worry when it comes to foldable phone sales might not be related to the phone’s sky-high price or regular competitors from the mobile business. There may be a more significant threat to Samsung’s success, and it could come from an unexpected company.
