Photo battle between the iPhone and the Pixel has a surprising winner
For as amazing as camera quality on the iPhone is today, the original iPhone camera was nothing to write home about. Equipped with nothing more than a fixed-focus 2-megapixel camera, the original iPhone delivered subpar pictures even compared to other devices at the time.
Apple, though, eventually started throwing a lot of money at camera development. Before long, it seemed that each successive iPhone routinely set a new bar for mobile camera quality that competitors simply couldn’t keep up with. That said, the mobile landscape is always changing and Apple now has some stiff competition when it comes to mobile photography. What’s more, there’s a strong case to be made that Apple these days finds itself playing catch-up when it comes to overall camera quality.

These before-and-after photos of the volcano that caused Indonesia’s tsunami are insane
A big chunk of the Anak Krakatau volcano collapsed last month off the coast of a couple of Indonesian islands, with the collapse of that 158-acre section into the water transforming the volcano into basically a flat pancake of its former self. Post-collapse, the volcano that used to tower more than 1,100 feet into the sky was now just a quarter of that size.
The collapse also had a deadly consequence. It triggered a tsunami with waves of up to 10 feet tall that slammed into the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. More than 400 people were killed, 1,400 were injured and thousands more were left without homes.

Netflix is starting to share audience numbers that it’s never disclosed before
Well, now we know why Netflix felt comfortable announcing the largest price hike in the history of the streaming service a few days ago.
Raising prices would be exactly the wrong move if you were shedding subscribers and your business was spiraling, which is certainly not the case here. The streaming giant just reported its fourth quarter earnings performance after the market close today, which included the announcement that Netflix added 8.84 million subscribers during the holiday quarter. That grows its total count almost 26 percent, to 139 million subscribers worldwide.

Verizon’s sweet new BOGO deal lets you score a free iPhone XR, Pixel 3 or Galaxy S9
Verizon is launching another one of its BOGO deals on top smartphones starting today, a limited-time offer that makes leading handsets available for free or at a discount when you purchase another phone at full-price.
The BOGO (buy one get one free) promotion comes on the same day Verizon’s Apple Music promotion begins. In terms of the latter, the company is going to start offering free Apple Music as part of its Beyond Unlimited and Above Unlimited plans — an outgrowth of a promotion that actually began last year, when Verizon started offering unlimited subscribers six months of Apple Music for free. Customers responded favorably, so the deal is now being expanded.

Next-gen iPhone XR to offer a huge boost in cellular performance
If you thought the leap from 3G to 4G was incredible, the forthcoming rollout of 5G will be nothing short of astounding. The data speeds afforded by 5G are genuinely hard to believe and will undoubtedly impact the way we use our devices in a fundamental way. Now, the good news is that 5G phones will start arriving en masse later this year. The bad news, if you’re an iPhone owner, is that Apple reportedly won’t embrace 5G until 2020.
In the interim, though, Apple reportedly has something cooking for its next-gen iPhone XR. According to a new research report from Barclays (via MacRumors), the next iteration of the iPhone XR will offer improved cellular connectivity thanks to a 4×4 MIMO antenna design.

Twitter has acknowledged a bug that revealed Android users’ private tweets
Twitter just disclosed the existence of the kind of privacy bug you’d normally expect to hear coming out of Facebook, which has been dogged repeatedly by this kind of thing over the years. Now it’s Twitter’s turn, with the social network acknowledging today an issue affecting the “Protect your Tweets” feature associated with some accounts. Turns out, some Android users who enabled that setting — which sets their tweets to “private” — actually had their tweets displayed publicly. For a shockingly long amount of time, almost five years.

LG is about to unveil a new flagship phone unlike anything else we’ll see in 2019
We have almost reached the edges of the phone when it comes to display size, but smartphone makers this year will continue to increase screen-to-body ratios. The best example is the Galaxy S10, a highly anticipated Android flagship that will feature an Infinity-O display with very tiny bezels. The only other way to extend a phone’s screen is to go for a foldable design — mobile devices that can operate in tablet and smartphone modes. Samsung is also doing that in 2019, although the Galaxy F will reportedly be released with limited availability and a sky-high price tag. But new reports say that a new LG phone, not necessarily the LG G8 that should be unveiled at MWC 2019 next month, might feature a totally different design unlike anything else we’ll see this year.
