To make ends meet during the shutdown, federal employees are driving for Uber

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the results of the partial federal government shutdown now persisting for over a month is that some 800,000 workers on Uncle Sam’s payroll are having to scramble to make ends meet, since they still don’t know when they’re going to get their next paycheck. In fact, the next time you hail an Uber, you might meet one such worker.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said during an appearance on CNBC’s program Squawk Box Wednesday that many furloughed federal workers are turning to the ridesharing platform as a short-term way of making the money they need at the moment. “We love it when new driver partners join the platform,” he said, “but this is most definitely not how we want new driver partners to join.”

This is what a star looks like when it dies

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Our Sun is one of the reasons we’re all here today and we simply couldn’t exist without it, but it won’t be around forever. At some point far in the future our Sun will die, and when it does it’ll probably look a lot like this image captured by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope.

What you’re seeing here is a nebula labeled ESO 577-24, and it’s what’s left of what was once a red giant star and, before that, a main sequence star in the prime of its life. Now, it’s a white-hot ball of matter a fraction of its original size, and the colossal blast of gas surrounding it is the star’s “last breath.”

Real-life photos of the Galaxy S10 show the unreleased phone in all its splendor

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

After seeing alleged Galaxy S10 press renders from an accessory maker a few days ago as well as a blurry image of a Galaxy S10 prototype from Korea, we got to see a photo of the Galaxy S10+ just the other day, although it didn’t reveal too many new details about the phone. We knew it was supposed to be a Galaxy S10+ prototype thanks to the dual-lens punch-hole camera, but a sticker covered a large part of the screen. Hours later, more images surfaced on Twitter, showing the alleged Galaxy S10 phone. This time around, we get to see the handset in all its splendor, complete with a functional display as well as a confirmation of a feature not many other Android flagship phones have.

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Apple’s AirPods might be the biggest name in true wireless earbuds, but they’re hardly the best. If you’re willing to pay a bit of a premium, you can easily enjoy sound quality that’s on par with the best corded Bluetooth earbuds out there. Our favorites are the Master & Dynamic MW07 Earphones, but they’re pricey at $300. The Bang & Olufsen Beoplay E8 Premium Truly Wireless Bluetooth Earphones come in at a close second, and they carry the same $300 price tag. If you snag a pair right now on Amazon though, you’ll only pay $211.

Hulu dropped the price of its standard plan right after Netflix raised its prices

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In what is either an incredibly timely coincidence or an intentional act of aggression, Hulu announced on Wednesday that it is cutting the price of its standard plan down from $7.99 to $5.99 on February 26th. Hulu has previously lowered the price of this plan, but always as part of a temporary promotion. This appears to be permanent. The “No Ads” plan will remain at its current price of $11.99, as will the $12.99 Hulu/Spotify combo plan.

Hulu’s announcement comes just days after Netflix unveiled the biggest price increase in the history of the streaming service. Netflix’s popular standard plan (HD video and two streams at once) jumped from $10.99 to $12.99, while the basic plan was bumped up by a dollar and the premium plan increased by two dollars.

Huge potential ‘Avengers: Endgame’ spoiler comes from the distant past

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

In the same way that our favorite Avengers will travel back in time in Endgame to prevent the decimation that occurred at the hands of Thanos in Infinity War, we travelled back in time to scoop up a huge potential spoiler for the upcoming fourth Avengers movie. Well, we went back in time virtually, and that’s because the internet never forgets. That’s right, people who worked on previous MCU movies said something that seemed innocuous enough at the time. But the same information carries new weight several years and MCU movies later, and context is obviously key.

China successfully grew plants on the Moon, but they promptly died

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It didn’t last long, but thanks to China’s Chang’e 4 lander there was a very brief period about a week ago when mankind knew that life existed somewhere other than Earth.

China’s mission to the Moon brought with it a tiny enclosed ecosystem that included tiny seeds in soil, and the country’s space agency eagerly announced that the seeds had sprouted. Unfortunately, things have gone a bit downhill since that monumental moment, and the extreme temperatures of the lunar surface ultimately doomed the plants to an early death.
