Collision between young Earth and Mars-sized planet might be why we’re all here today

Humans have tamed (or utterly destroyed) much of the planet in our brief time here, but there’s still plenty we don’t know about Earth’s history. How the early Earth formed, how its abundance of various chemicals and elements got here, and what shaped its future are things scientists have been trying to explain for a long time, and a new theory has emerged that may finally fit.

In a new study published in Science Advances, researchers from Rice University propose a comprehensive theory that not only accounts for Earth’s incredible, life-giving resources, but even helps to explain how Earth’s moon formed. It all begins with a big crash.

Nintendo Switch tops the PS4 as the best-selling console of 2018

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Despite trailing the PlayStation 4 for a majority of 2018, the Nintendo Switch ended up being the best-selling video game console of last year. That’s according to the latest report from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) and The NPD Group, which reveals that the Switch topped the competition in unit sales and dollars in 2018.

Up through October, the PS4 seemed to be on track to take the title (once again), but after losing out to the Switch in November and December, Nintendo’s hybrid console managed to overtake Sony for the year. The Switch also broke a few records along the way, including having the best December unit sales for a console since 2010, and reaching the highest annual total (unit sales and dollars) for a console since the PS4 in 2015.

Apple veteran who worked on Mac for 14 years will help Google ‘kill’ Android

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Tech fans are probably well aware that Google wants to replace Android and Chrome with a unified operating system that would work just as well on smartphones, tablets as it would on laptops. Fuchsia, as it’s being referred to for the time being, will also work on other smart gadgets, such as smart speakers — in fact, a report said that Google will first use Fuchsia on speakers before bringing it to smartphones.

But even though Fuchsia has been in the news for quite a while now, Google has not acknowledged its existence (although it hasn’t tried to prevent leaks either), and now we have a new development in the Fuchsia story. Google has hired a former macOS veteran from Apple to help it bring Fuchsia to market.

Elon Musk says Tesla will roll out a new ‘Sentry Mode’ for enhanced security

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Despite all of the negativity that can sometimes shroud Tesla, there’s no denying that the company revolutionized the auto industry in a relatively short period of time. Not only did Tesla prove that there was a market for electric vehicles, the success it enjoyed with the Model S ultimately spurred a number of traditional automakers to start developing their own electric vehicles. Without the Model S, for example, it’s fair to say that there would be no Porsche Taycan.

One of the more prominent innovations introduced by Tesla involves software improvements. Because so much of the Tesla experience hinges on software, the company is able to improve the overall driving experience by rolling out brand new features via over-the-air software updates. The most obvious example, of course, is when Tesla in late 2015 rolled out an update that introduced Autopilot to the world.

NASA swaps out astronauts for first manned flight on Boeing’s new ship

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Last year was a huge year for private spaceflight, with a steady stream of very successful launches and huge progress being made on more ambitious ventures. It’s already looking like 2019 is going to be an even bigger test for SpaceX, as well as competitor Boeing. Both groups are expected to soon begin their new manned spacecraft systems that will eventually serve NASA’s needs, but first NASA has to make sure it has its crews ready.

In a new announcement, NASA reveals that it is swapping out one of the astronauts expected to participate in the very first manned flight of the Boeing Starliner ship, which will ferry travelers to and from the International Space Station.

Microsoft’s browser fights fake news by trying to steer you away from certain sites

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Once Mark Zuckerberg realized a year or so ago the degree to which fake news had become a pretty widespread problem across his beleaguered social network — that it was getting swamped by everything from sketchy publishers to trolls and Russians — he decided to attack the problem. By, well, not directly attacking the problem. More like doing his best to wall it off and push it to one corner where he hopes Facebook visitors will never see it.

We’re talking, of course, about his decision roughly coinciding with the 2016 presidential election to combat fake news by just dialing the organic reach of every brand and news publisher account on the platform even closer to zero than it already was. Voila! You don’t have to get into the messy business of making editorial calls about what’s fake news and what isn’t — potentially pissing off big swaths of your user base — if you just tamp down the reach of everything that’s not a personal Facebook account.

Leaving Netflix in February 2019: Every movie and TV show being removed

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

While the list of arrivals in February wasn’t quite as impressive as it has been in recent months, the list of departures is shockingly short. By my count, there are only seventeen pieces of content leaving the streaming service between now and February 20th, with a vast majority of those departures coming in the first three days.

That’s not to say that there aren’t a few quality movies and shows being removed next month, including Children of Men, The Big Lebowski, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Shaun of the Dead. All five seasons of Queer as Folk are leaving the service as well, and Sing, which was a pretty solid animated movie, is leaving February 3rd. So while Netflix has limited the damage, there are a few movies you might want to put on your queue before they vanish.

Amazon introduces ‘Scout’ – a brand new, self-driving delivery robot

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

It’s always exciting keeping tabs on Amazon because there’s no telling what the company is going to get into next. Whether it’s delivery drones or cashierless grocery stores, the company has a penchant for implementing novel and downright clever business ideas.

The latest example of Amazon thinking outside the box comes in the form of a brand new self-driving delivery service dubbed Scout. With Amazon always looking for ways to facilitate the delivery of Amazon items, Scout is an all-electric self-driving vehicle that will maneuver across sidewalks in order to deliver purchased items to customers.
