By now we all know that fried foods are not usually the best choice when it comes to healthy eating, but just how bad could they be? A new study aimed to answer that question, and it comes with some serious warnings about specific fried foods.

The study followed over 100,000 individuals — all postmenopausal women — from as early as 1993 through early 2017. The researchers surveyed the women who answered questions about their diets and the scientists kept tabs on their mortality rates. What they found was that fried chicken and fish were the foods most the foods most closely linked to early death.

There’s no room for a T-Mobile streaming service in an already saturated market

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Earlier yesterday, a rumor surfaced claiming that T-Mobile would be rolling out a brand new ad-supported TV streaming service over the next few weeks. The rumor didn’t seem all that outrageous given previous reports that T-Mobile has been working on rolling out a skinny bundle of select TV channels.

While the rumored T-Mobile TV streaming service was a far cry from the revolutionary and “disruptive new TV service” T-Mobile CEO John Legere promised to roll out in 2018, it turns out that T-Mobile’s TV plans are even more uninspiring than we first thought.

No one knows why non-existent bands have started showing up on Spotify playlists

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Spotify has officially acknowledged a curious phenomenon that’s manifested itself recently across the streaming music service’s platform. Fake artists and bands with strange names — and practically no Internet presence at all — have been showing up on legitimate Spotify user playlists. And, presumably, getting legitimate streaming revenue when their fake songs get played.

The bands that are putting a digital, streaming spin on that old bit of wisdom about faking it till you make it include acts like Bergenulo Five, DJ Bruej and Bratte Night. A BBC investigation found that the Bergenulo Five had racked up almost 60,000 track streams, and there seems to be a common thread with so-called “mysterycore” bands like these — songs that have basically no lyrics, minimalist song titles and barebones cover art.

NASA reveals best-yet image of twin space rocks Ultima Thule

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s 2019 started off with a bang as its New Horizons probe zipped by the most distant object mankind has ever tried to visit, a strange space rock known as Ultima Thule. Scientists quickly discovered that Ultima Thule isn’t one object, but two, making it the first contact binary ever studied in such detail.

Now, as NASA continues to gather more data from the flyby, the New Horizons team has revealed the most detailed glimpse yet of Ultima Thule, and it’s a real stunner.

Congressman: The world would be better off if Facebook didn’t buy Instagram

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Do we finally have a sense of why so many key Facebook leaders, particularly co-founders of the myriad products that comprise its suite of apps, have left the company over the last year or so? Maybe, if today’s huge news revealed by The New York Times — about the company’s ambition via a directive from Mark Zuckerberg to integrate all of its messaging services — is any indication. Apparently, Zuckerberg wants to not only make the backend more cohesive for products including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger. He also wants to make it possible for a Facebook user to start chatting with, say, someone on Instagram who may not even have a Facebook account.

One California congressman, however, is not having it. U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, a Democrat, took to social media today to blast the social networking giant over the fact that it owns Instagram at all. The company never should have been allowed by antitrust officials to buy Instagram in the first place, Khanna argued, adding that its ownership of the photo-sharing site still raises antitrust concerns in his mind today.

NASA is now being sued by the owner of an Apollo 11 lunar sample bag

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When Apollo 11 astronauts returned from the Moon and handed over the first samples of lunar material ever gathered by human hands it was a monumental moment for NASA and humanity as a whole. It would have been impossible for the astronauts to predict that one of their more mundane pieces of equipment would become the subject of a hefty lawsuit almost half a century later.

Nancy Lee Carlson was the previous owner of a lunar sample return bag that was used during the Apollo 11 mission to carry moon rocks and dust. The bag has an incredible history, and not just because it visited the Moon. As CollectSpace reports, Carlson now alleges that NASA owes her money over damage to the bag.

Buckle up, because this is one very odd story.

Samsung is apparently preparing to launch a fitness tracker and earbuds soon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s Unpacked 2019 event is fast approaching, and there’s starting to be speculation the company may launch a couple of additional products at that time. Specifically, a new Galaxy Fit fitness tracker as well as wireless earbuds.

This news comes after a variety of sites spotted model registrations for two Galaxy Fit variants, both with Bluetooth 5.0 support. Per SamMobile, one is designated as simply ‘Galaxy Fit,’ while the other is listed as ‘Galaxy Fit e’ — and while it’s not clear what the extra letter means, one guess is that it reflects eSIM support. Also, both models will apparently come in black, silver, yellow and white.
