The latest Galaxy S10 leak brings some unfortunate news

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Of all the things we’ve been hearing about the Galaxy S10 for the past three months, battery life is the one detail that’s still a bit of a mystery. That’s because we’ve seen conflicting reports about battery sizes and fast-charging speeds. Some leaks delivered great news, including reports from trusted leakers. But unfortunately, documentation from regulatory bodies paints a slightly different picture.

A huge smartphone innovation is coming that no one asked for and no one wants

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The smartphone market has seen a rebirth over the past decade, and it’s not exactly a mystery why Apple and Samsung have emerged as the two biggest players in the market across most of the globe. Yes, these two companies are leaders in terms of design and innovations, but there’s another big factor at play. In fact, it may very well be the biggest factor: money. Apple and Samsung have massive marketing budgets that reach up into the billions each year. They spend a fortune advertising their flagship smartphones, and they work with wireless carriers and other electronics retailers to feature them prominently. Do you think Samsung used some sort of sorcery back in 2012 when it was somehow able to make good on its marketing boss’s impossible promise to be as big as Apple in the smartphone market? Did Samsung’s Galaxy phones change dramatically in any meaningful way back then? No, Samsung introduced its anti-Apple ad campaign and dumped billions of dollars into that and other marketing initiatives.

As Apple and Samsung used their massive ad budgets to dominate the market, other smartphone makers were left by the wayside. Once-competitive companies like HTC and LG were left by the wayside, and they continue to have trouble rediscovering success to this day. They’ve tried all sorts of tricks, from new form factors and designs to new features that aren’t found on any of Apple’s iPhones or Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones. Sadly, nothing has worked so far. Next month at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show, LG will make a new attempt to gain some traction in its uphill battle against Apple and Samsung. Unfortunately, the new innovation the company seemingly plans to use in an effort to steal the limelight is something no one asked for and no one wants.

Facebook just shut down the iPhone version of the most despicable spying program it ever created

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Facebook keeps promising it’ll do better to serve its customers, but more and more reports reveal nasty surprises about the way it conducts its business. Because Facebook and all its other products are free to use online services, they need to make money off of ads, so Facebook has to collect plenty of data from consumers. It’s the same thing Google does, and it’s a compromise that works for many people. But it’s one thing to collect browsing data, and quite another to spy on people via research apps that pay users, including minors, a low monthly fee in exchange to everything that happens on a mobile device.

NASA offers best look yet at surface of space rock Bennu

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx asteroid probe has already had quite an eventful year. After initially arriving at the space rock known as Bennu in early December, the spacecraft ended 2018 by successfully entering orbit around the object, making Bennu the smallest body ever orbited by a man made spacecraft.

Now, as NASA prepares for what will be a months-long investigation of the asteroid, the OSIRIS-REx team has revealed the most stunning images of the rock so far. Captured from orbit by the probe’s NavCam imaging tools, the photos give us an even better look at the debris-littered surface of Bennu.

Surprising no one, survey shows almost 60% of Americans have ditched cable TV

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but cable TV is continuing to bleed subscribers in record numbers as they flock to cheaper Internet-based options — cutting the cord, in other words, in favor of options like Netflix, Hulu and the like. Indeed, a new survey of a little more than 5,000 Americans by Chicago-based Waterstone Management Group found that consumers are increasingly being lured by the content available between choices like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime — and the simplicity of the subscriptions, as opposed to the fees and contracts that come with cable packages — to finally cut cable out of their lives entirely.

Almost 60 percent of Americans, according to this new survey, have canceled their cable TV packages, with only 12 percent affirming they’re fine with continuing to pay traditional cable companies for TV. In another sign of how dire things have become for those cable companies, though, another 29 percent of Americans responded to this survey by saying they’re close to canceling their cable subscription and going all-in on streaming.
