Apple is teaming up with American Airlines to offer passengers some in-flight entertainment
The day after Apple released its earnings for the most recent holiday quarter — which, among other things, underscored how much the company is continuing to orient itself around its myriad services like Apple Music — the iPhone maker released word of a new services-related partnership that’s about to get under way.
Apple and American Airlines have teamed up to offer fliers free access via in-flight Wi-Fi to the more than 50 million songs available through Apple Music, which comes at an interesting time for both companies.

Like Facebook, Google also got a data collection app past Apple
If you’ve paid any attention at all to tech news today — or, heck, even just glanced briefly at Twitter — you’re likely aware that Facebook is getting hammered at the moment over a pretty creepy-sounding revelation.
The company has been using a Facebook Research app it developed for iOS and Android to pretty much spy on everything a participating user does on their smartphone. It’s permission-based, and Facebook has apparently being paying the users who participate, but this has nevertheless generated yet another serious black eye for Facebook, which bypassed Apple’s App Store and seemingly broke some of Apple’s rules to do this. Apple responded by yanking some technical permissions for Facebook that have cause some chaos internally at the social networking company, and the whole thing seems to be continuing to escalate.

Xbox Live issues have made countless Xbox One consoles unusable
In what has to be a significant blow for anyone who decided to take the day off to avoid the cold, Microsoft is currently dealing with a serious Xbox Live issue that is making it impossible for many Xbox One owners to use their consoles at all. A quick search on Reddit or Twitter results in thousands of tweets and comments from frustrated users who say they are being confronted with a black screen shortly after their console starts up.
Not long after word began to spread about the issue, the Xbox Support team revealed in a tweet that it was “aware of reports of Xbox One console startup, title update and sign-in errors.” The Xbox Live Service Status page on Xbox.com has been updated to reflect this, but we still don’t know exactly what’s going on.

iFixit will sell iPhone battery replacement kits for $30 through 2019
While some of the iPhone controversies over the past several years have been dramatized to the point of parody, the so-called “Batterygate” was different. After endless speculation, Apple finally admitted to throttling the performance of older iPhone models in order to extend the lifespan of aging batteries, and the backlash was fierce. So then, in order to appease disappointed consumers, Apple lowered the price of battery replacements for every iPhone 6 and newer model from $79 to $29 for the duration of 2018, which Tim Cook admits affected iPhone revenue.
Now that 2018 has come and gone, iPhone battery replacements prices jumped back up. But if you don’t want to pay full price for Apple to replace your battery, there’s still another $29 option. This week, iFixit announced that its battery replacement kits (which it lowered to match Apple last year) will stay at $29.99 through 2019.

Samsung’s working on another foldable smartphone and no one realized it
We’re still a few weeks out from the long-awaited reveal of Samsung’s foldable phone, and we have some fresh details to share that have just leaked about Samsung’s bendy phone game plan. Except, well, we’re not actually talking about that foldable phone, though — turns out, the dedicated gaming phone we first heard about last year that Samsung has been working on is seemingly going to be yet another foldable device, one that’s separate from the foldable Galaxy phone Samsung has been hoping will usher in a new chapter for the handset industry.
