This heart-shaped meteorite will be auctioned off just in time for Valentine’s Day
As far as space relics go, meteorites are highly prized by collectors and scientists alike. The charred, twisted remnants of space rock can teach us a lot about the kind of natural material that is still drifting through Earth’s neighborhood, and they happen to look pretty cool, too.
That being said, rocks from space aren’t necessarily romantic in any way. Unless, of course, you’re talking about “The Heart Of Space,” which just happens to be a meteorite shaped like a heart. The iconic space rock will go up for auction soon, ending just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Netflix usage surpassed cable and satellite TV for the first time in 2018
The streaming video landscape is definitely going to look more interesting — and fragmented — than ever as 2019 continues to unfold, with established names like Netflix and Hulu continuing to grab market share as traditional cable providers try anything to slow down their bleeding of subscribers and new contenders like Disney+ enter the picture. For proof of how dramatic a shift is currently under way, PwC is also out with its annual streaming and pay-TV report (A New Video World Order) which includes this revealing statistic among a ton of other insights:
The number of consumers subscribed to pay TV dropped from 73% to 67% last year — no surprise there — while Netflix usage (76%) surpassed cable and satellite for the first time.

Hubble just spotted a never-before-seen galaxy hiding in plain sight
There’s no shortage of interesting things to see in our own galaxy, but astronomers love finding new galactic neighbors as well. Observing other galaxies can teach scientists a lot about how the massive structures form, live, and die.
Using images from the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers studying distant, dim stars accidentally stumbled upon something they hadn’t anticipated: An entirely undocumented galaxy sitting around 30 million light-years from Earth. News of the discovery was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The mysterious Google ‘Rammus’ could be one of the first Fuchsia devices
A few days ago, we talked about a strange Google Coral device that was spotted in benchmark tests, wondering whether it happened to be the first sighting of the Pixel 4. The scores the Coral obtained were in line with what’s expected from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor, and the Coral moniker is aquatic enough to make sense for Pixel hardware. But that’s not the only mysterious Google device that showed up on Geekbench.
Google Rammus is an even stranger breed, and that’s because it’s rocking Intel Core m3 and Core i7 chips. Nothing strange about that, you might say, as Pixel-branded Chromebooks do run on Intel chips. But the Rammus isn’t a Chrome OS device, as it runs Android 9 Pie, according to the benchmark.

Cheaper Nintendo Switch rumors persist despite Nintendo’s denials
Rumors of a Nintendo Switch redesign have been cropping up with increased regularity in recent weeks. Some have pointed to a Switch upgrade with improved specifications, while others have hinted at a more affordable version of the hybrid console. It even appeared as though the company had taken notice last week, as Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in a interview that they are “not considering a successor or a price cut at this time.”
But this week, Japanese publication Nikkei added more fuel to the fire Nintendo attempted to put out by reporting that a cheaper, smaller Switch variant would arrive at some point in the 2019 financial year (April 2019 – March 2020). As GearNuke notes, the report claims the redesigned Switch will be “portable” and “easy to carry around.”

Here’s what the polar vortex looks like from NASA’s heat-mapping satellite
You don’t have to live in the U.S. Midwest to have heard about the polar vortex, but if you do you’ve no doubt felt its effects. Frigid temperatures are swallowing up many states thanks to a mass of arctic air making its way much farther south than it normally does, and NASA caught a glimpse of it using one of its trusty satellites.
The Aqua satellite, launched way back in 2002, is equipped with an instrument called the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS for short) and it’s capable of producing detailed heat maps over a huge geographical area. NASA used this tool to monitor the change in temperature created by the polar vortex.

Apple bans Google’s developer certificate one day after doing it to Facebook
Apple isn’t messing around. The iPhone maker’s leadership has increasingly made the championing of privacy a hallmark of its brand identity, and with that in mind Apple has taken swift and dramatic action over the past 24 hours in response to the actions of two of the biggest technology companies who also depend on Apple’s platform.
One day after doing it to Facebook, it’s now been revealed that Apple has likewise blocked Google’s developer certificate — effectively restricting Google’s ability to test its iOS apps internally. As a consequence, internal versions at Google of everything from Google Maps to Gmail aren’t working anymore, which can be traced back to a couple of things yesterday.

While Apple’s FaceTime bug is being fixed, here are the best alternative video call apps
Apple started off the week catching flack for an embarrassing security-related bug. The company quickly found a temporary fix, and a software update is still coming this week to address the fact that FaceTime allowed users in some cases to hear audio of the person on the other end of the call before that call actually connected and began. Compounding Apple’s black eye, it was revealed the company was actually notified about this bug before now, and now the New York attorney general’s office is opening an investigation into the matter.

China says it’s even colder on the Moon than we thought
China’s Chang’e 4 mission has been a rousing success for the country’s space agency, and it’s already celebrated a number of “firsts,” including being the first lander to perform a soft landing on the far side of the Moon.
The far side of the Moon — that is, the side that we never see here on Earth when we gaze skyward — hasn’t been studied in as great of detail as its near side. One of the things scientists were eager to observe is just how chilly the lander and its rover would get when enduring the lunar night, and now we finally know.
