At-home DNA testing kits were once little more than a fun distraction that might reveal something about your family history that had been long forgotten. These days, however, the battle over who has access to your genetic testing results is hotter than ever, and a new report alleges that one of the largest private DNA testing companies has been aiding the FBI for months.

First reported by BuzzFeed News, Family Tree DNA admitted that it’s been working investigators to test DNA samples and potentially match them with suspects or their relatives. Needless to say, this isn’t sitting well with privacy advocates.

Recent days have seen the simmering tension between Apple and Facebook reach an unprecedented level, after months of back-and-forth sniping, veiled potshots and a cold war between the two tech titans that suddenly became quasi-hot. The CEOs of both companies have taken shots at the other via public remarks before, but this week saw something remarkable — Apple blocked Facebook’s ability to work on beta versions of Facebook iOS apps internally as punishment for the creepy app you may have heard about that Facebook installed on some people’s phones to monitor everything they do. Apple has since restored Facebook’s enterprise developer certificates, which returns things to the status quo, but it does raise a question.

Israel is about to launch the first privately-funded mission to the Moon

Getting to the Moon takes an incredible amount of technical know-how, engineering excellence, and of course money. That’s why embarking on a lunar landing mission is typically done by a government-funded space agency rather than private citizens, but the rise of commercialized rocket launches is helping to change that.

This month, Israel plans to become the fourth country to embark on a Moon landing, and it’s doing so thanks to a nonprofit group which is privately funding the mission. The Beresheet spacecraft from SpaceIL will be the first ever privately-funded Moon mission, and it’s going to use SpaceX to make it happen.

Uber rides in New York City are about to get a lot more expensive

If you happen to live in New York City, you’re about to see a discernible price increase when it comes to getting around town in an Uber. Starting today, Uber rides will be more expensive as the company seeks to comply with a new hourly minimum wage law for folks who drive for ride share companies like Uber.

As part of the new rule, Uber drivers will now be entitled to earn $17.22 an hour, a figure which excludes items such as gas, tolls, and other fees.

‘Dr. Mario World’ is Nintendo’s next mobile game, coming summer 2019

Just hours after announcing that its mobile Mario Kart game has been delayed to summer 2019, Nintendo offered up some good news for fans of its mobile division. In addition to Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo revealed that it is also going to partner with Line Corp. to launch another game called Dr. Mario World this summer.

According to Friday’s news release, “Nintendo and LINE will co-develop and jointly operate a new action puzzle game featuring Dr. Mario.” The Dr. Mario series stretches all the way back to 1990, when the original game hit the NES and Game Boy. The latest game in the series, Dr. Mario: Miracle Cure, came out for the 3DS in 2015.

One of the more peculiar business decisions Apple has made in regards to the iPhone involves the company discontinuing the beloved iPhone SE. In an era where smartphones keep getting bigger, the iPhone SE provided users who prefer a smaller form factor with a much-needed alternative. After all, it’s a little bit crazy that the iPhone XR — Apple’s entry-level iPhone — is closer in size to an iPhone 6 Plus than it is to an iPhone 6.

Apple, though, stopped selling the iPhone SE this past September. The move struck many as strange, especially given previous remarks from Tim Cook which said that the iPhone SE was a far more popular device than Apple initially anticipated. Put simply, there exists a sizable contingent of users who prefer a smaller-sized device like the iPhone SE.
