Huge leaks reveal all the design secrets of Samsung’s answer to the iPhone XR

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 will come in three 4G versions that will compete directly against the three iPhones Apple released a few months ago. These are the Galaxy S10e (formerly known as Galaxy S10 Lite), Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+. All devices will have the same hardware, but the cheapest model, which is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s cheaper iPhone XR, will make a few compromises when it comes to design, fingerprint sensor tech, and cameras. We already saw press renders of the Galaxy S10e leak a few days ago, but we’ve got two huge leaks that provide an even better look at the phone’s remaining secrets.

Breakfast might not be that important after all, study says

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’ve long been told that breakfast is “the most important meal of the day.” It’s said that eating a meal in the morning can give your metabolism a bit of a boost and possibly prevent overeating later in the day. This may be beneficial if you’re hoping to maintain or lose weight, or so breakfast proponents would have us believe.

As it turns out, a regular breakfast might not be all that great for people trying to slim down. A new research paper published in the British Medical Journal reviewed over a dozen different studies on breakfast habits in order to paint a more detailed picture of how early meals affect weight, and the data doesn’t look particularly good for breakfast lovers.

This Chrome extension auto-skips Netflix credits and adds useful shortcuts

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

We’ve covered half a dozen or so great Netflix extensions for your browser in the past, but if you’re still in the market for one that perfectly suits your needs, you might want to check out Netflix Extended. Although it shares more than a few similarities with the extensions we’ve already covered, it has a few unique features of its own that might just put it over the top. And, as always, it’s free, so there’s no harm in trying it to see how you like it.

Brought to our attention by The Next Web, Netflix Extended brings a relatively varied and extensive feature set to the table, including perhaps the most common feature for a Netflix browser extension: Skipping intros and recaps. Getting to the content faster without having to manually intervene is a necessity for any Netflix plugin.

A look at all of the new emojis coming to your smartphone in 2019

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you already have trouble finding the exact emoji you’re looking for, well, things are about to get a tad more complex. Earlier today, the Unicode Consortium provided its official stamp of approval for new emojis that will likely start showing up on iPhone and Android devices later in the year. The list of new emojis is more inclusive of individuals with disabilities, which is something Apple actually pushed for early last year. With that said, some of the new emojis include people in wheel chairs, bionic arms, seeing eye dogs, and more.

Some other new emojis we can look forward to include a fresh assortment of animals, including a sloth, a skunk, an orangutan, and a flamingo. Some of the more obscure emojis to make the cut for 2019 include falafel, waffle, a band-aid, and ballet shoes. All told, 59 new emojis will be coming our way soon. Incidentally, that figure jumps to 230 emojis once all the variations of skin tone and gender are taken into account.

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Less than a month out from its last such offer, Verizon is once again preparing to launch another of its BOGO deals — this one set to begin on Thursday, February 7 — that makes the hottest smartphones on the market right now available to consumers for free or at a discount when another phone is purchased at full price.

Starting exactly one week before Valentine’s Day, this sweet new BOGO (buy one get one free) offer includes new handsets like the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, in addition to offering the newest versions of Apple Watch (the Series 3 and 4) at a discount. Of course, it’s important to point out here that there is some fine print associated with this offer.

How to watch Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There was some question as to whether or not there would even be a State of the Union this year, amid the chaos of the government shutdown, but now that the government is back up and running (for the time being), President Donald Trump has opted to go ahead with his address on Tuesday night. If you’d like to tune in and find out what Trump has to say, there are an endless variety of options, both online and off, for you to choose from.

As for the contents of his speech, we won’t know until it begins at 6:00 PM PT / 9:00 PM ET in front of a joint session of Congress, but we have a feeling that the border wall he so desperately wants to erect between the US and Mexico will be on the list. Trade policy and tariffs will inevitably come up as well.

Chinese satellite snaps image of the Moon from the side we never see

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Moon dominates the night sky and, as the closest large body to Earth, we get to see it plenty. Unfortunately, since the Moon only shows us one face thanks to its tidal lock with Earth, and its far side is rarely the subject of photography.

Now, thanks to China’s efforts to learn as much as possible about the least-studied side of the Moon, we have a brand new view of it. The image, which was captured by the Longjiang-2 satellite that was sent skyward last year, even features Earth photobombing scene in the background.

New market research suggests the smart speaker race is pretty much over

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A new market research report out from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners offering a look at the smart speaker landscape paints a pretty lopsided picture of the state of things, such that you might justifiably read the key takeaways and wonder if the race is pretty much over at this point.

Among the key findings: First, the smart speaker market continues to grow. It’s consistently ticked upward from 36 million units in December 2017 to 53 million units this past September to, now, 66 million units. That’s been helped along, according to the CIRP data, in part by the fact that the number of people owning more than one of these speakers is likewise growing. Through December 31, 35% of all smart speaker owners reported having more than one such device, compared to just 18% of owners saying the same thing one year earlier.

A meteorite exploded over Cuba and its boom was captured on video

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Space rocks come crashing down to Earth with somewhat startling regularity, and when they do they often create a big boom. When a meteorite detonates in Earth’s atmosphere it produces an explosion which researchers call bolides, or simply “fireballs.”

Most of the time, a fireball appears and disappears before anyone is quick enough to grab their smartphone and record it, so we’re left with dash cam videos and still images from stationary cameras to give us a glimpse of the event. Last week, a fireball came crashing down in Cuba and, in a rare treat, we actually get to hear it.

New ABC Entertainment president says she’s open to a reboot of ‘Lost’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat: There’s nothing definitive to report about anything new related to ABC’s hit series Lost that ran for six seasons starting in 2004. That is, nothing definitive… yet.

During a panel today as part of the winter gathering of the Television Critics Association, new ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke’s presence was preceded by some clips that were played from ABC’s heyday and included some of the network’s most popular shows. The clip kicked off with that memorable scene from the third season finale of Lost, the one in which Jack (played by Matthew Fox) practically begs Evangeline Lilly’s character Kate to go back to the island (“We have to go back, Kate!”).

Hmm, we have to go back… If you’re thinking what we’re thinking, well, so did a reporter who was on hand. Surely, that clip couldn’t have been included by accident, out of all the Lost clips that could have been included?
