Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series is reportedly going to be filmed in Scotland

Amazon has apparently decided that Scotland will suffice as Middle Earth for the Lord of the Rings prequel series it’s developing — a series that will reportedly have the biggest budget in the history of television.

Location scouts on behalf of the company who dressed and acted like tourists, blending in to the local communities, were reportedly spotted last summer checking out sites like Dunskey Castle, Portpatrick, Callander in Perthshire and Balloch Castle Country Park near Loch Lomond. That’s according to Scottish newspaper The Daily Record, which quotes an “insider” as saying that “When Amazon people scouted locations, they didn’t make themselves known, acted as tourists and connected straight away with local communities.”

Leaked Galaxy S10 renders give us our clearest look yet at the new phones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Although the internet will undoubtedly prove me wrong over the next few days, there doesn’t seems to be much else left to leak about the Galaxy S10 series. We know how many phones Samsung is set to unveil at its Unpacked event on February 20th, we know what those phones will look like, and we know how they’ll differ from their predecessors. But until the phones have been made official by Samsung, the leaks will continue to trickle in.

That’s exactly what happened over the weekend, as prolific leaker Evan Blass shared the highest quality renders we have seen to date of the S10, S10+, and S10E — all of which will be unveiled next week.

New video highlights the iPhone SE 2 we wish Apple would make

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

What’s happened with the iPhone SE is downright bizarre. For reasons that remain unclear, Apple discontinued the device this past September, essentially leaving iPhone users interested in a more compact form factor with literally zero options. Meanwhile, Apple’s entry-level iPhone XR is closer in size to an iPhone 7 Plus than an iPhone 7. Put simply, Apple has seemingly abandoned a large contingent of users who prefer a device that can easily be managed with one-hand.

For a while, there were quite a few rumors regarding Apple’s plans to introduce a next-gen iPhone SE. Unfortunately, those rumors died down months ago and there hasn’t been any evidence pointing to an iPhone SE 2 hitting store shelves anytime soon. In the meantime, we’ll simply have to make do with iPhone SE 2 concepts until Apple, hopefully, comes to its senses.

Google rolls out augmented reality navigation for select Google Maps users

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Save for an optional feature of Pokemon Go, augmented reality has yet to have the kind of impact that many analysts and developers seem to have expected. Conceptually, AR is fascinating — capable of turning your surroundings into an interactive computer screen. But in practice, we’ve yet to see a killer app that truly delivers on the promise of the technology. Thanks to Google, though, we might be one step closer to getting there.

Over the weekend, The Wall Street Journal’s David Pierce shared his thoughts on an upcoming AR navigation feature for Google Maps, which the company announced at Google I/O last May. He doesn’t think it will replace the standard navigation functionality, but he came away impressed with the “early version” he tested.

Elon Musk reveals just how much a ticket to Mars will cost

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

All hopes are on Mars to be the next big adventure for mankind, with groups like NASA working hard to make a manned mission to the Red Planet a reality and companies like SpaceX betting big on Earth-to-Mars travel.

SpaceX boss Elon Musk has long promised that living on Mars will be a reality within our lifetimes, even suggesting that he himself might move there at some point in the not-too-distant future. But once all the kinks are ironed out, how much is it going to cost to leave Earth behind and become a full-fledged Martian? Musk thinks he has the answer.

Woes mount for Activision Blizzard, which is planning layoffs after a sales slump

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Activision Blizzard isn’t having the greatest start to the week, dealing as it is with the effects of a protracted sales slump as well as a refund program that’s been announced for Activision’s ill-fated Guitar Hero Live.

The refund is for US consumers who bought the game between December 1, 2017 and January 1, 2019, and while the publisher didn’t say, it’s assumed the refund is a result of the shutdown of the Guitar Hero TV streaming music service in the game. Engadget notes in a piece today that with the shutdown of the game’s streamer, that also culled its library of songs from 484 to just 42 — no doubt frustrating gamers who paid for more songs.

Marvel announces four animated series for Hulu, including ‘Howard the Duck’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Marvel’s partnership with Netflix appears to be coming to an unceremonious end. After producing an ambitious series of interconnected, live-action comic book shows — which culminated in the crossover event The DefendersNetflix canceled Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil last fall without any warning or explanation. The Punisher and Jessica Jones are still hanging on for now, but might not be long for this world either.

But with Netflix on its way out of the picture, Marvel has instead opted to strengthen its ties with Hulu, as news comes out of the Television Critics Association winter press tour that four animated series are in the works for the streaming service: Howard the Duck, M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, and Tigra & Dazzler.
