When it comes to Apple’s product cycle, it’s no great surprise that new iPhone releases always garner more attention than new iOS updates. And with good reason, there haven’t been any drastic updates to iOS in quite a few years. Sure, we’ve seen some overall performance enhancements and a solid number of new features in recent memory, but iOS 7 was arguably the last iOS update that turned heads and generated an avalanche of excitement.

iOS 13, though, has the potential to change that. Whereas iOS 12 was something of a Snow Leopard update with any number of under-the-hood system improvements, iOS 13 will reportedly usher in a number of stark design changes to the UI. Indeed, rumor has it that Apple was initially planning to introduce a revamped home screen in iOS 12 before opting to push it back to iOS 13 in an effort to focus on more pressing performance issues.

Twelve years ago this month, Microsoft began distributing invites for the Halo 3 beta through copies of an Xbox 360 exclusive title called Crackdown. The explosive open-world action game might not have made much of a splash if not for the inclusion of the beta invite, but once people actually got their hands on Crackdown, they discovered something unlike any other open-world game on the market. Because that’s the year when Apple introduced the App Store alongside the iPhone 3G and iPhone OS 2.0. Third-party apps were nothing new at the time, but they were an absolute disaster on every major smartphone platform. Installing them meant going to a third-party app store on your PC, buying apps, downloading them to your computer, and they connecting your smartphone to your PC in order to install the new apps.

The App Store was nothing short of a total game-changer. The idea of placing a third-party software portal directly on a smartphone and performing direct installations seems so simple now, but at the time it opened up a whole new world of possibilities. Apps, as most people will agree, are pivotal to the smartphone experience. Devices like iPhones and Galaxy smartphones are great out of the box, but third-party apps expand their capabilities in an endless number of directions. Smartphone vendors are on a race to create the perfect phone, a device that would feature a no-compromise all-screen display. The iPhone X design is one way of utilizing as much as possible of the front side to increase the size of the screen. The Galaxy S10 Infinity-O design is one other way of doing the same job. In a story that sounds like it could have been published by The Onion, an unnamed shopper caused a major incident at his local home improvement mega-store when he chose the wrong words to describe his intestinal discomfort.

According to KWCH, Home Depot staff called 911 after a customer reportedly told them that a man had just made a bomb threat in the bathroom. As it turns out, the man did make something of a threat, but not the kind that usually causes law enforcement to take notice.

Huawei isn’t just a top three worldwide smartphone vendor and the number one handset maker in China, but also at the forefront of 5G — the next standard in mobile telecommunications. Huawei also happens to be facing increased scrutiny in various western markets over spying concerns that were first raised by the US a few years ago.

The company’s smartphone and 5G businesses face risks in several markets, and while Huawei proved it can sell a massive number of smartphones without being present in the US, losing 5G contracts to rivaling networking firms has to be worrisome. The Chinese company appears to be willing to go through any security tests to stay in the race to sell 5G networking equipment to central and eastern European markets, according to its Chief Security Officer for the US, Andy Purdy.
