Google is testing a new feature that speeds up the Chrome browser – here’s how to get it now

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

With nearly 65% of the global market according to market share monitor Net applications, Google’s Chrome web browser is by far the most widely used desktop browser on the planet. It’s not even close. In fact, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer is in the #2 spot and it has less than 11% of the global market. People love Chrome, and that’s understandable considering its many advantages over other web browsers. On top of that, Chrome for the most part adheres to the same minimalistic principles that helped make Google’s web browser so popular. For the most part, Chrome is fast and smooth, and it doesn’t hurt that it syncs all of your data across multiple devices with ease, so you can enjoy the same familiar experience on any device, desktop or mobile. Of course nothing is perfect, however, and Chrome does have a few issues that tend to drive people crazy.

For one thing, Chrome can often be a memory hog. This is especially true if you tend to leave multiple tabs open in the background. As I type up this very article, Chrome is using about 5GB of RAM on my computer while the next closest app is taking up less than 500MB. That’s exactly why we recently showed you an awesome free Chrome extension that can drastically reduce the browser’s load with a single click. When Chrome uses up fewer resources, the browser itself is faster and there are also system-wide benefits such as better battery life on a laptop. If you’re looking for more ways to speed up Chrome and help make it less of a RAM hog, Google is working on a new feature that will likely be baked right into Chrome in the near future. If you want, however, you can actually start using it right now.

We’ve been calling Samsung’s first foldable smartphone the Galaxy F most of the time, but that’s not going to be the commercial name of the product, a leaker just said. The phone will be called Galaxy Fold, a moniker we’ve seen thrown around in previous rumors about the phone.

An Android flagship you won’t be able to buy will ‘rewrite the rules’ in March

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

This is supposed to be Samsung’s biggest week this year, as the Korean giant is about to unveil the Galaxy S10 series and hopefully tell us more about the Galaxy F foldable handset, but that doesn’t mean its competitors will watch from the sidelines. Xiaomi will also unveil a new flagship on Wednesday. Come Sunday, we’ll get a bunch of other Galaxy S10 alternatives from various companies. But before any of that happens, a company whose phones you can’t really buy wants you to know that it’ll unveil a new phone a month from now, in Paris.

Dozens of new Salmonella cases linked to turkey products in ongoing outbreak

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just issued a new update to its ongoing investigation of a months-long Salmonella outbreak linked to turkey products. The update, which is the first since mid December of last year, adds over 60 new confirmed cases of Salmonella infection to the 200+ cases that were already logged.

A total of 279 cases have now been confirmed across 41 states, with over 100 hospitalized patients and one death resulting from the outbreak. Unfortunately, the bulletin brings more bad news as there’s still been no confirmed source of the Salmonella, and the investigation remains active.

Analyst: Apple’s streaming video service won’t ‘move the needle’ for a while

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At this point, there have been a slew of announcements related to the content Apple is commissioning and buying for its upcoming Netflix-like streaming service. The iPhone maker has lined up dozens of projects spanning both movies and original series that will see the company working with A-listers ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell, to name just a few. It’s part of Apple’s company-wide shifting of emphasis away from a focus on hardware sales and more towards the revenue-generating services that users actually rely on the company’s hardware for.

Google will make it tougher for sites to block Chrome’s incognito mode

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Having the option to switch over to Chrome’s incognito mode at any time is comforting for many users, but it isn’t a foolproof tool. While you may value your privacy, not all web developers do, and as many of them point out on Stack Overflow, it’s surprisingly easy to find out when a visitor is browsing one of their sites in an incognito window. Some of those sites even go so far as to block incognito users altogether, as they can’t track them and deliver them ads, thus making them less valuable. But Google appears to be fighting back against this.

Spotted by 9to5Google last week, a series of recent commits to Chrome’s source code suggest that the browser will create a virtual FileSystem API (which is disabled while in incognito mode) and trick websites into thinking the API is operating normally, taking away the workaround many sites were using to detect incognito users.

NASA captures best look yet at China’s lunar lander hanging out on the Moon

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

China started the year off strong by landing a lunar probe on the Moon’s surface and deploying a tiny rover to do a bit of exploring. The country’s space agency is the first to land such machines on the far side of the Moon that we Earthlings never get to see with our own eyes.

NASA recently published images captured from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing the lander as a tiny pale dot against a sea of gray. It was a cool shot, but now we have an even better one, and it shows both the lander and rover doing their thing on the dusty surface of the Moon.
