Apple’s self-driving car might be a lot different than we think
A somewhat curious report out of Germany claims that Apple hasn’t abandoned work on developing its own branded car. Even more bizarre, though, is a tidbit that Apple’s long-rumored electric car may not be a car at all, but rather an electric van.
Originally posted in the German-language Manager Magazin, the report claims that Apple has been busy working on van prototypes as it continues to expend R&D resources investigating a wide array of auto-related components, from battery technology to advanced electric motors.

Huawei trolls Galaxy S10 with a feature it copied from the iPhone
The smartphone wars are only going to get more interesting this year, especially now that Samsung’s Galaxy S10 is official. The Korean giant confirmed almost all the rumors that preceded the Unpacked press conference, but that doesn’t make the Galaxy S10 and its variants any less impressive.
From design to new features to software, the phone is decidedly more interesting than its predecessor. And the fact that Samsung’s biggest Android rival is already trolling the Galaxy S10 series is proof of that.

You can drive this tiny electric vehicle without a license
As electric vehicles gain traction in just about every form, the line between true “cars” and other alternative forms of transportation continues to blur. Citroën is perfectly fine with that, and its all-electric Ami One is an almost-car that you can drive even if you don’t have a license.
The two-seater looks a lot like some of the other quirky electric concepts we’ve seen over the past half decade or so, but the company is positioning it as a shareable vehicle akin to electric scooters which have begun to take over large cities.

Ahead of MWC next week, new data illustrates global smartphone slowdown
When you consider the latest global smartphone marketshare data from Gartner, which highlights a protracted industry slump in terms of handset sales, it starts to put things in perspective — Samsung, for example, deciding it needs to dramatically shake things up and give something new a try, like a foldable phone.
Gartner’s newly released data shows, among other things, that global smartphone sales was essentially flat during the recent holiday quarter — up just 0.1 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, with 408.4 million units shipped.

NASA’s confidence in SpaceX and Boeing may be wavering
To say that NASA bet big on U.S. companies Boeing and SpaceX to provide solutions for manned spaceflight would be a colossal understatement. The space agency basically put all its eggs in two baskets, and neither of them seem to be capable of staying on track, with countless delays, setbacks, and the cost overruns that accompany them.
As Reuters reports, NASA’s recent rundown of “key risk items” heavily features the manned spaceflight hardware currently being worked on by SpaceX and Boeing, and warns that additional delays are likely in the cards. According to a source that spoke to Reuters, as many as 35 issues have been highlighted by NASA’s advisory panel, and addressing those problems will potentially push both companies even farther off schedule.

If you’re willing to walk, you can take advantage of Lyft’s ‘most affordable ride’
Uber and Lyft always seem to be keeping pace with one another, whether its on prices or features, which is why we weren’t too surprised to learn this week that Lyft is introducing a new carpool option called “Shared Saver.” Much like Uber’s Express Pool option, Shared Saver offers rides at cheaper prices, providing you’re willing to wait a few extra minutes for a match and walk to meet your driver rather than have them come straight to you.
There is one major benefit to Shared Saver (other than the lower prices), as Lyft says that these rides will never be affected by surge pricing. In theory, any ride from one specific destination to another should be almost exactly the same price with Shared Saver, no matter what time of day or what the weather’s like.

Netflix just bought one of the biggest movies in the world
One of the biggest movies in the world right now has already surpassed half a billion dollars at the box office in China without even having completed its second week of release yet. That puts the movie, Wandering Earth, on par with some of the biggest big screen titles to emerge from the US in recent years, like Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
The movie, a sci-fi epic that tells the story of people trying to save earth from being destroyed by the sun, is already the second-highest grossing film in China ever. Which should explain why Netflix just snatched it up, in a deal that will introduce the film to an even wider audience via the popular streaming giant.

Science might have finally figured out why zebras have stripes
Zebras are one of nature’s most interesting creations. They’re like horses, only they have a distinct pattern and colors that are unlike just about any other species. Their stripped coats have been the subject of much scientific debate over the years, with a number of proposed theories attempting to explain its advantages.
You might remember being told in school that zebras have stripes because it makes it harder for predators to pick out one animal to chase, or that the patterns are unique to each animal and act like an identification for others in the group. Now, a new study suggests that the stripes may have a different purpose entirely.
