Wild concept video shows what a foldable iPhone might look like

Are foldable phones the wave of the future? Color me skeptical, but Samsung apparently seems to think so. Earlier this week at the company’s Unpacked event, Samsung officially unveiled its long-rumored foldable smartphone, a device appropriately dubbed the Galaxy Fold. Boasting a 7.3-inch display when completely open and a 4.6-inch display when folded up, the device is undeniably intriguing. Still, it remains to be seen if the Galaxy Fold will spearhead a new trajectory of smartphone innovation or simply be nothing more than a laughable novelty a’la Google Glass.

Naturally, the Galaxy Fold has prompted some pundits to heap praise upon Samsung for innovating while simultaneously blasting Apple for being boring. Interestingly enough, Apple, believe it or not, has published patents pertaining to foldable iPhone designs. What’s more, a Bank of America analyst last year said that Apple has been busy working on a foldable iPhone that could see the light of day as early as 2020.

If you were holding out hope that Apple might release a 5G enabled iPhone later this year, we’ve got bad news for you. According to a report from Reuters, Intel earlier today announced that its 5G modems will not be available until 2020. And seeing as how Apple now relies upon Intel for its chips — thanks to its ongoing legal dispute with Qualcomm — we now have official confirmation that iPhones with support for 5G won’t hit stores shelves until 2020 at the absolute earliest.

Specifically, Sandra Rivera of Intel articulated that while Intel’s 5G modems will hit manufacturers this year, it doesn’t anticipate that the modems will end up in any smartphones until next year.

OnePlus will launch its 5G phone by June, but not in the US

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

OnePlus has teased a little bit more about its 5G phone. The Chinese smartphone maker says it plans to launch the device during the second quarter, when it will be among the first handset makers to release such a device.

The company, which rose to popularity in part because it brought affordable flagship phones to international markets at affordable prices, has shared an image of the device prototype with USA Today that the company will also be showing off at MWC in a few days. The newspaper reports that “not much is discernible” about the device from the image, though it is known that the handset will run the same Snapdragon 855 processor from Qualcomm that’s found in Samsung’s new S10 line of Galaxy devices.

Japan’s asteroid probe shot a bullet at a space rock, and it’s a very big deal

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Japan’s space program JAXA has had a very eventful 24 hours. The group’s Hayabusa2 asteroid probe, which arrived at its target Ryugu last year, performed its most challenging maneuver yet by leaving its orbit around the rock and touching down on its surface for just a moment. But that’s not all it did.

The plan all along has been for Hayabusa2 to retrieve samples of the diamond-shaped asteroid in order to bring them back to Earth, but snatching a sample isn’t as easy as it sounds. In order to efficiently collect dust from the rock during its brief touchdown the spacecraft had to fire a bullet into Ryugu, and it had to do all of this without direct control from its handlers on Earth over 180 million miles away.

‘The Haunting of Hill House’ sequel title gives me high hopes for season 2

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The Haunting of Hill House is one of the best horror shows you can stream on Netflix right now. It’s the kind of series you can’t put down, and you’ll wish it wouldn’t ends, no matter how scary it becomes. But Hill House is also the kind of TV series that doesn’t need a sequel. Without spoiling anything for you, I’ll just say that, as amazing as the story is, a sequel would seem like overkill. At least, that’s what I used to think.

Then I learned the title of the sequel series.

Huawei’s foldable Mate X just leaked, and it puts the Galaxy Fold to shame

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Samsung made waves earlier this week by unveiling its Galaxy Fold smartphone at the Galaxy S10 launch event in California, giving us what many believe to be a glimpse into the future of smartphone design. That might be the case, but we all know the next wave of foldable phones will be far more impressive. Unfortunately for Samsung, it might not even have the best foldable phone of this wave, as the Huawei Mate X has seemingly leaked a couple days ahead of schedule. Providing it’s legitimate, Huawei could very well win this round.
