The crazy story of how Google Maps’ Satellite view was almost called Bird Mode

Practically anyone who works in an office setting and has to answer to layers of management can sympathize with a certain kind of bureaucracy. The kind where good ideas have to confront the harsh light of middle- and upper-management review, where executives hearing an idea for the first time that had been the product of much study and review practically bat it away by suggesting something cringeworthy — or at the very least eye roll-inducing.

iOS 13 concept photos show off some awesome iPhone UI changes

With WWDC fast approaching, we’re only a few months away from Apple officially unveiling iOS 13. As opposed to last year, the next-gen version of Apple’s popular mobile OS will likely introduce a number of new and compelling features. If you recall, iOS 12 largely focused on improving overall system performance.

With word that some of Apple’s more ambitious iOS features were pushed back from iOS 12 to iOS 13, it stands to reason that Apple at WWDC this year will have a number of interesting surprises in store for us. While iOS 13 rumors have been few and far in between, some of the leaked features we’ve seen thus far include a new Dark Mode, the overdue eradication of the volume HUD, and, intriguingly enough, a redesigned home screen.

Chinese scientists invent new method of sterilizing drinking water with sunlight

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Making drinking water safe to consume is actually more complicated than you might imagine. Destroying bacteria in any water source can be a challenge, and the methods that are used to cleanse water before it is made available to the public are often costly and not great for the environment.

Now, researchers in China have come up with a novel new method for eliminating bacteria in drinking water that uses a special material and a bit of sunlight to disinfect large quantities of water in a relatively short period of time. A paper on the new method has been published in the journal Chem.

Samsung is apparently mulling a rebrand of its Galaxy S smartphones

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

At least as far as Samsung’s Galaxy S flagship smartphones go, it may be time for a time new name.

That’s according to a report from South Korean’s Yonhap News Agency, which quotes an unnamed company source over the weekend as confirming that the South Korea-based smartphone manufacturing giant is looking into a new naming convention for its next generation of flagship phones. The consideration comes on the heels of the high-profile launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 series of devices, as well as the long-awaited unveiling of the Galaxy Fold — Samsung’s pricey new foldable smartphone.

Marvel shows on Disney+ will be directly linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

When Netflix and Marvel first announced their deal — one which resulted in five original series and a crossover event — fans of the comic book empire’s movie efforts were excited to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe translated to the small screen. But other than a few sly references, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and the other Netflix shows stayed in their own lane, content to explore street-level stories and all but disconnect from the larger MCU.

That strategy was relatively successful, but it won’t be the same approach that Marvel takes for its upcoming Disney+ shows. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Kevin Feige noted that all of Marvel’s Disney+ productions will be handled by Marvel Studios (the movie division) rather than the TV division. Therefore, they will connect to the MCU (Avengers, Iron Man, Black Panther, Thor) in ways that the Netflix shows never did.

It’s finally here, smartphone fans. 5G is no longer just a buzzword that everyone likes to throw around at events like Mobile World Congress and talk about how great the future will be. However, carriers are just starting to deploy their networks, so you might not find coverage just yet — assuming you even have access to a 5G phone.

Also, the OnePlus 5G, a phone the Chinese company confirmed many moons ago, is finally here. However, it’s only a prototype device that’s being shown at MWC at Qualcomm’s booth to demo one of the major things that 5G will make possible soon: Incredibly fast cloud gaming.

Microsoft will reportedly announce two next-gen Xbox consoles in June

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The clearest indication yet that this console generation is winding down came last year when Sony revealed it would not be in attendance at E3 2019. This will mark the first time Sony has ever missed the show, and while that might put a damper on the excitement level for many gamers, it also creates an opening for Microsoft and Nintendo to steal the spotlight. And based on a new report, Microsoft will be taking full advantage of that opportunity.

Late last week, French video game news site JeuxVideo reported that Microsoft will unveil its next generation of Xbox devices at E3 2019. Expected to launch in 2020, it’s unlikely that we’ll get much (if anything) in the way of release and pricing information, but it will give Microsoft a chance to get a jump on the competition.
