Samsung’s Galaxy S10 doesn’t support one of Android’s most innovative new features
Six months ago back in August 2018, Google released Android 9.0 Pie to the public. The latest and greatest version of Google’s mobile platform featured a whole bunch of excellent new features, such as Adaptive Battery tech that stretches out battery life and AI-powered app predictions with actions that are triggered by things you do repeatedly on your phone. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, of course, since Android Pie is packed full of new features as well as enhancements to earlier features. It’s a fantastic upgrade that Android users love… or at least, they might love it when they finally get it. Android 9.0 Pie was installed on less than 0.1% of all Android devices as of the last time Google’s version distribution dashboard was updated in Q4 2018, and that figure is still believed to be in the low single digits now.
Getting new updates pushed out to Android phones is a top priority for Google, and that’s why the company introduced a new feature in Android 8.0 Oreo aimed at simplifying the process. It’s called Project Treble, and it basically separates core Android code from all of the extra custom features added smartphone makers like Samsung and LG. This way when new updates are released by Google, they can be applied to the core Android code and pushed out without having to make any big changes to the vendor enhancements. It’s an awesome feature that will hopefully have an impact down the road, but it’s also not the only way Google improved Android updates in Oreo.

New report shows the number of robocalls grew a whopping 325% worldwide last year
The team behind caller ID service Hiya has taken advantage of the attention generated by MWC this week to release its Global Robocall Radar Report, putting some hard data to the massive growth in the scourge of unwanted calls, and the results it found are unfortunately as depressing as you’d expect.
Based on an analysis of more than 12 billion calls worldwide each month, Hiya’s report finds that, globally, spam calls saw a massive 325% spike in 2018, with the problem particularly acute in places like the US, as well as Italy, France, the UK and Argentina among areas hit hardest by nuisance and fraudulent phone calls.

The Galaxy Fold has an exciting new feature Samsung didn’t even announce on stage
When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold last week, the company confirmed that the handset would launch with 512GB of eUFS 3.0 storage, which may not immediately mean anything to you. It didn’t even detail its new eUFS 3.0 tech on stage, but it’s the next-gen storage standard that’s expected to dramatically increase storage transfer speeds on mobile devices. At one point during the deluge of Galaxy S10 rumors and leaks, we heard that the phone would come with eUFS 3.0 storage on board — but that didn’t happen. Instead, the Galaxy S10 handsets come with up to 1TB of eUFS 2.1 flash memory. That’s still fast storage, but not as fast as what the Galaxy Fold will offer: the foldable phone will need just three seconds to transfer a 3.7GB Full HD movie, which is four times faster than most of the laptop SSD memory out there.

‘Pokemon Sword’ and ‘Pokemon Shield’ announced for Nintendo Switch
Just as we expected, Nintendo revealed the first core Pokemon RPG titles for the Switch on Wednesday morning during the Pokemon Direct live stream. Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield will be the first mainline entries in the Pokemon franchise to ever release for a home console rather than a portable device, but like Red, Blue, Diamond, Pearl, Sun, and Moon before them, Sword and Shield will be full-fledged Pokemon RPGs.
Nintendo wasn’t ready to share a release date for the two games yet, but the good news is that both titles are slated to release simultaneously in late 2019. We might not be getting Metroid Prime 4 this year, but Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield should help to tide over Switch owners this holiday season.

Nintendo’s ‘Pokemon Direct’ live stream: How to watch and what to expect
We’re just a few days removed from the last Nintendo Direct live stream, but the Japanese video game publisher was not satisfied with a single online event for the month of February. On Wednesday morning at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET, the first Pokemon Direct since 2017 will air, featuring “roughly 7 minutes of new information.”
Nintendo didn’t offer any hints whatsoever as to which specific games might be featured during the stream, but there’s a chance that this could be our first look at the core Pokemon title set to arrive on the Switch by the end of 2019. And unlike previous spinoff titles that have been released on consoles, the next Pokemon game for Switch will be “in the tradition of Pokémon X and Y and Sun and Moon,” with a new region and new monsters.

Galaxy S10 review: Samsung’s completely redesigned flagships live up to the hype
I’ve been covering the smartphone industry for close to 15 years now. In all that time, I’m not sure I have ever seen a smartphone series make such a dramatic reversal from one year to the next. 2018’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were easily the most boring flagship phones Samsung has released in years. In fact, they may have been Samsung’s most boring update ever. The handsets reused the same design as Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ from 2017, similar to what Apple does every other year with its “S” upgrades. The problem with the Galaxy S9 and S9+, however, is that they reused the same design without adding any new marquee features at all.
Some hardcore Android fans complained when I first started discussing how boring the Galaxy S9 phones are on the site, but numbers don’t lie. According to information from insiders and the huge declines in revenue from Samsung’s mobile division, last year’s Galaxy S9 handsets were Samsung’s worst-selling Galaxy S phones since 2012. It’s almost as if Samsung viewed 2018 as something of a gap year while it cooked up the true successors to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, and now the completely redesigned Galaxy S phones we’ve been waiting for are finally here.
Nearly every complaint I had about least year’s S9 phones has been addressed by Samsung’s new Galaxy S10 lineup. But the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ aren’t just better upgrades, they’re the most exciting new Android flagship phones the world has seen in quite some time. So, in just one year, Samsung went from releasing its most boring Galaxy S upgrade ever to its most exciting new smartphones in the Galaxy S line’s decade-long history.
