Render shows Huawei smartphone design with a slide-out, dual selfie camera
The push by smartphone makers to dedicate as much of the front of their handsets as possible to the actual display has made the inclusion of front-facing elements like the camera an increasingly tighter fit. Some devices, of course, have tried to solve that problem with the introduction of a notch to house the relevant components. Other device-makers like Huawei, meanwhile, are trying something different — a slide-out system that can reveal hidden elements like the selfie camera, so that they don’t have to take up precious real estate on the front.

You could win a year of free flights from JetBlue, but there’s a wild catch
In a somewhat novel way to make headlines, JetBlue is offering folks the opportunity to fly free for a full year. Is there a catch? Of course there is. This isn’t so much a promotion as it is a contest, and if you want a chance to win you’ll have to delete every single one of your Instagram photos. In short, if you care more about travelling to and fro on someone else’s dime than you do about your social media presence, this is definitely a contest you’ll want to keep in mind.
Word of the contest — which is called All You Can Jet — first came up via Instagram last week. As for the particulars, JetBlue will select three lucky winners who will essentially be able to travel cost-free across North America, Central America, and select locations in the Caribbean. The only costs the winners will incur will be the taxes and fees associated with the flights. So while not 100% free, it’s still quite the opportunity for anyone looking to get away.

Scientists trained an AI to identify lung cancer, and now it’s as smart as a pathologist
As AI continues to permeate just about every aspect of our lives, we’re now beginning to see some serious advances in the ability of computer systems to diagnose various diseases. One of the biggest areas of focus for scientists is in cancer diagnosis, and we’ve already seen machine learning algorithms capable of identifying cancers like breast cancer.
Now, researchers from Dartmouth’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center have announced their development of a deep neural network that can identify lung cancer on tissue slides with accuracy that matches a human pathologist.

This web tool could be another step toward killing passwords for good
There are so many hassles and problems that can be tied to the necessity of securing accounts, websites and the like with passwords. Passwords that, of course, can be forgotten. Passwords that are in many cases too simplistic, which facilitates an ease in remembering them, but makes them also easier to crack.
Ideally, it would be worthwhile to slowly move away from a reliance on passwords, which is something that an announcement from the World Wide Web Consortium and the FIDO Alliance today could hopefully be a step toward achieving.

Yet another round of blood pressure meds hit with recall over cancer risk
Yet another blood pressure medication manufacturer is announcing a massive recall of its products due to potentially cancer-causing impurities. This time around it’s Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited which is recalling over 100 lots of tablets that might help your blood pressure but then give you cancer instead.
The recall covers two types of hypertension-treating tablets including Losartan potassium tablets and Losartan potassion / Hydrocholothiazide tablets. The impurity that may be present in the drugs is N-Methylnitrosobutyric acid, or NMBA. Previous recalls of blood pressure medications have cited culprits including NDEA, and while NMBA doesn’t pose as much of a risk as NDEA, it’s still worth paying attention to this new recall.

How to activate the hidden dark mode on Facebook Messenger
Over the weekend, Reddit sleuths discovered that dark mode had been added to the Facebook Messenger app. But rather than just putting the option in the settings menu, Facebook tasks you with sending the crescent moon emoji in any chat, at which point a bunch of moons will fall from the top of the screen and you’ll be presented with a prompt to turn on the “dark Messenger background.” Tapping the pop-up will take you straight to settings.
Dark mode is accessible to Messenger users around the world on iOS and Android devices, but for now, you will have to use the trick above to enable it. In the coming weeks, the setting will be available from the settings menu, so if you don’t want to send a moon emoji to anyone, you can just wait until dark mode is fully rolled out.
