NASA’s InSight lander tried to dig into Mars, but Mars had other plans
NASA has been quite pleased with the progress of the InSight lander mission, with just about everything going as well as could be expected. A smooth launch, easy flight to Mars and impeccable landing on the Red Planet’s surface had NASA feeling pretty upbeat, but Mars can be unforgiving.
The lander, which recently deployed listening tools to monitor the inner workings of the planet, began its efforts to dig into the dusty soil late last week, but things aren’t going nearly as smoothly as InSight’s engineers had hoped.

Forget iOS 13, we want the new Apple Watch to look this gorgeous
While iOS 13 will undoubtedly be the main attraction at Apple’s WWDC event this coming June, there’s a good chance we’ll see some interesting developments regarding watchOS as well. Though the initial incarnation of the Apple Watch featured a somewhat clunky design with respect to software, Apple over the years has improved upon the original design tremendously. The 2018 release of watchOS 5 in particular introduced a number of compelling UI changes that improved overall functionality and usability.
We haven’t heard a whole lot about what type of updates we can expect from the next iteration of watchOS, but that didn’t stop Matt Birchler from coming up with some intriguing watchOS 6 concept designs for Apple’s increasingly popular wearable. Though the software Apple releases doesn’t frequently align with concept designs — no matter how intriguing they appear to be — Birchler’s concepts present a number of interesting ideas that are certainly worth taking a look at.

This Samsung patent hints at the future of wire-free television sets
Samsung is one of the most prolific manufacturers of TVs around these days, and its newest designs promise a whole new level of stunning design and picture quality. Think the new 8K TVs that Samsung added to its lineup this year, as well as its Frame TVs that can be hung on the wall and display a beautiful piece of art whenever the TV is not in use as such. That’s one of a few different examples we could point to of Samsung trying to think of the TV as something other than a bland, utilitarian box.

Watch Japan’s asteroid probe fire a bullet into a space rock
It was just a couple of weeks ago that the Japan space program, JAXA, announced that its Hayabusa2 probe had successfully completed a maneuver never before attempted in space. The spacecraft dipped down, close to the surface of the asteroid known as Ryugu, fired a projectile at its surface, snatched some sample material, and then gently drifted back into its original position.
The maneuver was complex and risky, but Hayabusa2 pulled it off, and now we actually have video of how the entire thing played out.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners directed the finale because they felt like they had to
The closer we get to the premiere of the final season of Game of Thrones, the more tidbits hit the press, including a few significant details about the upcoming adventures in Westeros. A report earlier this week told us that an episode will deliver the biggest battle cinematic experience ever recorded on film, and that the episode might be 90 minutes long.

‘Captain Marvel’ presales on track to match ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Excitement continues to build for this weekend’s theatrical release of Captain Marvel, and by way of showing just how much anticipation there is among fans for this new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Fandango is out today with a new announcement that helps tell the story.
According to the movie site, advance ticket sales for the new Marvel flick starring Brie Larson are really strong. So strong, in fact, that this is Fandango’s biggest preseller since Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, while Fandango doesn’t disclose actual numbers, the service is saying that Captain Marvel presales are actually on track to surpass all other Fandango advance ticket sales since the release of Infinity War back in April 2018.

Apple’s 5G iPhone may face some interesting supply challenges
With the rest of the mobile world scrambling to embrace 5G in 2019, it’s no secret that Apple is in no rush to roll out iPhones with 5G support anytime soon. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given that Apple didn’t embrace 3G with the original iPhone and took its sweet time before embracing 4G LTE with the iPhone 5. Truthfully, Apple’s strategy with respect to 5G is perfectly understandable given that broad coverage for 5G across the country is going to take some time. Indeed, many carriers won’t see significant 5G coverage until the latter half of 2019.
All that said, a new report from Bloomberg relays that when Apple finally does decide to embrace 5G — presumably with its 2020 iPhone lineup — the company may have some trouble sourcing components. Remember, with Apple currently embroiled in a bitter legal dispute with Qualcomm, the company isn’t left with many options.
