If you’re a pop culture junkie, you should be using Amazon’s X-Ray feature

Unless you’re a super nerdy pop culture junkie who loves going down rabbit holes and consuming all the quirkiest, tiniest details of every movie and TV show you can find, most of the following probably will be news to you.

Did you know, for example, that in Deadpool 2 after Deadpool gets his legs torn off by Juggernaut and he hangs out with Blind Al waiting for them to grow back, he’s wearing the same shirt that Chunk wears in The Goonies? Josh Brolin, of course, was one of the stars in it — and he didn’t notice the shirt, according to Ryan Reynolds. Or how about this — did you know that, in the Star Wars franchise, the word Wookiee was inspired by Bill Wookey, a friend of actor Terry McGovern? Terry played a robot cop in George Lucas’ THX 1138, improvising the line “I think I ran over a Wookiee back there.”

‘Anthem’ is an endless wellspring of wasted potential

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

There were only a few things Anthem needed to get right to be a success — not the game of the year, or the next Fortnite-sized phenomenon, but a successful online shooter. It only gets one of those right, and when all is said and done, it’s probably the least important for the game’s long-term viability.

At a glance, Anthem is a highly-polished, triple-A title from one of the industry’s most celebrated developers. But then you play the game. It starts strong, throwing you into an epic battle where monstrous aliens are facing off against this world’s heroes: Freelancers. The freelancers fly around in javelins — exosuits that can be customized with a variety of weapons and special abilities, many of which you’ll collect while taking out opposing forces.

And if Anthem were nothing more than an Iron Man simulator, instead of one of the biggest games of 2019, it would be a rousing triumph. It might be the most overused description of the flying mechanic on the internet, but you really do feel like Tony Stark as you boost through the stunning wilderness of Anthem’s world.

‘Captain Marvel’ answers tons of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ questions – here are all the mysteries it solved

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Captain Marvel will top the box office with ease this weekend, considering it’s the most anticipated film of the week and the final Marvel movie before Avengers: Endgame. As expected, the movie answers plenty of questions about Endgame and the MCU universe, but it also creates plenty of new mysteries as well. After all, we’re looking at a span of 15 years between Captain Marvel and The Avengers, and Nick Fury started working with some of the original Avengers well ahead of that. Mind you, if you haven’t seen Captain Marvel, you’re in for quite a few spoilers — the same goes for Endgame too, as we’re going to discuss the Captain Marvel post-credits scenes and they involve Endgame.

Everything new coming to Netflix this week, and everything leaving (week of Mar. 10)

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Would you look at that! This week just so happens to kick off on Mario Day (MAR10). That has virtually nothing to do with the week in Netflix releases, but, much like Mario, many of the new shows and movies are sure to keep you all entertained. Was that too much of a stretch? I’m leaving it in anyway.

That aside, this week’s biggest releases are undoubtedly the Ben Affleck-led Triple Frontier, and the second half of the fifth season of Arrested Development. I thought the first half of season five was a bit more balanced than anything we got from season four, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they can stick the landing. And while Triple Frontier looks like several movies I’ve already seen, the strength of the cast is undeniable.

Captain Marvel raises even more questions ahead of ‘Avengers: Endgame’

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

If you already saw Captain Marvel, you know that the movie answers plenty of questions ahead of Avengers: Endgame, although that doesn’t mean it fixes everything. The film is set in 1995 well before Nick Fury became the boss of SHIELD, and well before Iron Man emerged as the leader of the Avengers. But we still have a huge gap between Captain Marvel and the first Avengers movie. With that in mind, we have plenty of new questions about the MCU that will take shape following the conclusion of Endgame. As is always the case though, if you haven’t seen Captain Marvel you should steer clear of this post because there are some huge spoilers ahead.

Watching this soft robotic hand move is strangely hypnotic

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Robotic technology had come a long way in the past couple of decades, with more intelligent machines capable of superhuman feats that were once thought impossible. Robots are great at doing things humans can’t, but giving machines the ability to mimic humans instead of surpassing us has proven to be challenging in some very interesting ways.

One of the ways robots tend to come up short when compared to us meat creatures is in their sense of touch. You can make a human-shaped hand out of metal and plastic just fine, but our flesh allows us to manipulate held objects in ways that robots often can’t. Now, a new soft robot concept could help to change that, and to be honest it looks kinda creepy.

These are the oldest tattoo tools ever found, dating back 2,700 years

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Today, tattoos are so common that we don’t really even consider their significance. You see someone with a flower on their arm or something and never give it another thought, but tattooing is a huge part of many cultures and tattooing traditions stretch back for centuries.

Many Pacific island nations hold tattoos in high regard, and a new research effort to date some ancient tattooing implements found decades ago reveals that the practice is thousands of years old. The study, which was published in The Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology, focuses on four tiny pieces of bone that were once thought to be lost forever.

Trolls hit ‘Captain Marvel’ with bad reviews on its release day on Rotten Tomatoes

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Captain Marvel was met by another barrage of negative user reviews via Rotten Tomatoes on the morning of its release Friday.

The film site had supposedly tweaked its system to fight the targeted work of trolls by nixing scores from users who, for example, haven’t even seen a particular movie yet. Even so, as of early Friday morning — before many cinemas were even open for the day in their local communities — the movie that tells the origin story of how Carol Danvers became a superhero had a 33% Rotten Tomatoes audience score generated from more than 58,000 reviews.
