A preview of everything Apple may announce at its upcoming March 25th event

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Every year, Apple holds two big events that tend to dominate the tech news cycle for weeks on end. Of course, there’s WWDC, Apple’s annual developer conference which takes place every June. And last but not least, there’s Apple’s annual iPhone event where we see the latest and greatest in Apple hardware. For years, these were the two major Apple events to keep tabs on, even though the company would sporadically sprinkle in a few iPad or Mac oriented hardware events along the way.

Fast forward to 2019 and the tech landscape has shifted dramatically. These days, the smartphone market is arguably saturated with impressive devices that aren’t all that different from one another. Sure, some of the foldable phones we’ve seen are intriguing, but they hardly seem like polished products ready to revolutionize the industry. With that said, Apple is decidedly preparing for a life beyond the iPhone. While iPhone sales aren’t going to evaporate, it’s no secret that year-over-year sales have been trending downward. In light of that, Apple — a company always in search of new revenue streams — is poised to embrace the world of services; which brings us, of course, to Apple’s forthcoming media event on Monday, March 25.

MoviePass co-founder’s new app rewards you with movie tickets for watching ads

After watching the millionth ad play before finally getting to see the movie he’d come to the theater to watch, Stacy Spikes was eventually struck with an idea for a new business.

Spikes is a co-founder and former CEO of MoviePass (we know, we know, but his tenure as chief executive at least pre-dates the company’s wave of troubles), and his new idea is an app called PreShow, a Kickstarter campaign for which has launched today. The basic idea: Watch ads, get rewarded with credit for movie tickets.

Truck hauling printer ink crashes, spilling untold riches onto Atlanta freeway

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

The cost of printer ink has long been known as one of the biggest scams in all of retail. You pay big bucks for tiny plastic vessels of ink that seem to run out way too fast, and once they do you have no choice but to buy more. Yesterday, one driver in Atlanta got a bit of revenge on the printer ink industry, and did so completely by accident.

As Atlanta’s WSB-TV reports, a semi hauling printer ink was involved in a one-vehicle accident on I-285 that resulted in some 40,000 pounds of the pricey ink spilling onto the roadway. That’s one seriously expensive accident.

Japanese scientists think they know where the Ryugu asteroid came from

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft has been hanging around the asteroid known as Ryugu for several months now. It first arrived in late 2018 and, in February, fired a projectile into it surface to collect a sample from the rock. It still has plenty of work to do but things are moving along nicely.

Now, after learning more about the asteroid itself, Japanese scientists believe they know where the object originated, narrowing down its possible asteroid “parents” to a pair of larger rocks. Conclusively determining Ryugu’s origins won’t be easy, but the color of the asteroid has helped researchers narrow things down quite a bit.

Huawei will unveil the P30 Pro next week — a flagship that will compete with the Galaxy S10 and iPhone XS, featuring a multi-lens camera with a periscope lens that can’t be found on any iPhone or Galaxy. We’ve seen a bunch of leaks so far covering the phone’s design, specs, and price, as well as a video highlighting the new zoom and low-light photography features of the handset. But, with just a few days to go until the press conference in Paris, Amazon has already listed the handset, confirming all the previous rumors and spoiling Huawei’s reveal.

Red Bull scared a bunch of people in Los Angeles with a fake meteor

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

A meteor streaking across the skies of Los Angeles is something we’ve all seen at least once in a big-budget Hollywood flick, but L.A. residents saw it for real last night… or at least they thought they did.

On Wednesday evening a massive fireball flew across the L.A. skyline and was caught on camera by hundreds of people. Social media began bustling with discussions about what it could be, if it was actually a space rock or a chunk of satellite debris, and whether it had done any damage. As it turns out, it wasn’t a space rock at all, but a marketing stunt.

T-Mobile unveils home broadband service that could expand after Sprint merger

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

T-Mobile on Thursday unveiled a limited home internet service that it plans to pilot for 50,000 mobile customers at $50 a month, with the company promising it could build on that, and eventually offer a lot more once its $26.5 billion merger with Sprint finally goes through.

For now, the new invitation-only service will focus on areas where the carrier can deliver high-speed internet access to connect up to 50,000 homes in rural and underserved parts of the country. Once it merges with Sprint, however, T-Mobile says it should be able to cover more than half of the US with broadband service by 2024.

Nokia phones caught mysteriously sending data to Chinese servers

%name Articles of Interest by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Nokia fans waited for years for the first Nokia-Android handsets to arrive, and it finally happened two years ago, when HMD Global unveiled its first Nokia 6 handset, after acquiring the right to use the brand. Since then, HMD unveiled a variety of Nokia handsets, culminating with the Nokia 9 PureView a few weeks ago.

However, the old Nokia has nothing to do with the Nokia phones we’re seeing today, and all these devices are made in China by Foxconn. This brings us to HMD’s first China-related issue, as some Nokia phones have apparently sent data to servers in the region without consent from users.
