Thousands of Amazon employees hear what you say to Alexa
Amazon has thousands of employees across the globe who actively listen to Alexa recordings from Echo devices as part of a broad effort to improve the reliability of the product, according to a new bombshell report from Bloomberg. The revelation has naturally caused a significant amount of blowback from privacy advocates, primarily because Amazon hasn’t exactly been upfront about what it’s doing.
As the Bloomberg report lays out, Amazon describes the process in its privacy materials as follows: “We use your requests to Alexa to train our speech recognition and natural language understanding systems.”

OnePlus 7 Pro is real and it’s coming this May, an insider says
OnePlus will launch a series of three phones soon, a report said earlier this week. That’s something the Chinese smartphone maker hasn’t done in the past, preferring to release a brand new flagship every six months or so. This year, with the advent of 5G, OnePlus will have three OnePlus 7 versions in stores, including an affordable OnePlus 7 device, a Pro version of it, and a Pro 5G phone that will ship in select markets. An insider who provided plenty of accurate OnePlus information in the past has confirmed that the Pro handsets are real.

Google’s Pixel is winning over plenty of Android users, but iOS users are staying put
A new study published by Counterpoint Research sounds like good news for Google’s efforts to expand the user base of its generally well-regarded Pixel smartphone series.
According to the study, the Pixel 3 is a solid enough handset that it’s convincing plenty of Samsung owners to switch over to a device that offers a pure Android experience. It turns out that a little more than half of the buyers this study classifies as having switched over to the Pixel 3 (51%) were former Samsung handset owners.

Researchers find fossil of ancient creature with 45 arms
Today’s oceans are full of interesting and bizarre creatures, many of which would seem utterly unfathomable to us if we hadn’t learned of their existence from a young age. Take a starfish, for example. If you hadn’t been taught about them as a child they’d seem otherworldly once you finally saw one.
The same is true for long-extinct species that populated ancient Earth. Now, a new discovery reveals the existence of a very, very peculiar creature from Earth’s past, and it’s drawing comparisons to an evil entity from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft.

Netflix is getting its own SiriusXM radio channel starting Monday
Netflix announced a deal today that will bring the streaming giant’s content to, for the first time, audiences of another subscription media company — opening up an outlet for Netflix via a new medium: Radio.
Netflix and SiriusXM have teamed up to launch Netflix is a Joke, a full-time comedy channel that will be exclusive to SiriusXM and which will be found on the radio service’s channel 93. Netflix, of course, has over the years developed an increasingly robust slate of comedy specials, which is what this new channel will feature highlights from.

NASA’s Curiosity rover just drilled a new hole on Mars
The year 2019 started off on a bittersweet note for NASA with the unfortunate demise of the incredibly trusty Opportunity rover on Mars. It was a sad day for the scientific community as a whole, but it wasn’t the only rover cruising around on the Red Planet, and NASA’s Curiosity rover has continued its stellar work even as it (probably) mourns the loss of its comrade.
Now, continuing on its quest to learn more about the Martian landscape, Curiosity has successfully drilled another hole in a new location, securing a sample that the robot will soon analyze.

Google wants to start making more money from Maps, and we all know what that means
Google is reportedly about to bring a version of the same playbook that turned its best-in-class search engine into an unstoppable money machine over to Google Maps, its service that more than 1 billion people rely on for directions and other related information. What that means for users, according to a new Bloomberg report, is that we may start to see more things like sponsored listings from businesses that have paid to be atop Google Maps results when you search for a variety of information, like nearby businesses.
Hopefully, Google’s reported interest in leaning on Maps as it hunts for new sources of revenue won’t mean the company goes overboard — like the way you have to scroll down past a slew of ads and highlighted results after conducting a Google Search, for example. As a heavy Google Maps user, though, I’m wary, especially given that relevancy may be even more important when looking for information within Maps than in Search.
