Coronavirus cases in Israel increased once public transportation restrictions were loosened

  • The number of coronavirus cases in Israel increased in the wake of the country easing restrictions on public transportation.
  • Buses and trains tend to pack in riders closely together and can be a catalyst for widespread exposure.

The coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing, but the virus has seemingly started to subside in many areas across the country. This, coupled with the fact that many people are growing increasingly restless on quarantine, has prompted a number of states to loosen up coronavirus-related restrictions. Some states, for example, are now allowing non-essential businesses like barbershops to reopen.

In light of the above, some medical researchers have cautioned that reopening states up too soon could result in a second, and potentially more deadly, wave to emerge. Indeed, we’re already starting to see this play out in a few countries across the world.

If you want to avoid the coronavirus, avoid this public place above all others

  • The coronavirus’ US toll is continuing to get worse, even as everyone’s attention has moved on to more acute tragedy that’s dominating attention in the country right now.
  • More than 1.8 million people have been infected with the coronavirus to-date in the US, and there have been more than 105,000 reported deaths here.
  • Experts say one particular public setting should probably especially be avoided by anyone worried about catching the coronavirus.

What extraordinary times we’re living in, when as recently as February most people had no inkling that a global pandemic was about to completely reshape daily life as we know it. The coronavirus’ US toll is something we’ve lived with for more than two months now, and even though the virus has now infected more than 1.8 million people in the US (and killed more than 105,000 as of the time of this writing, according to the latest stats from Johns Hopkins University), it’s now been supplanted by a tragedy of an altogether different kind.

We’re continuing to learn more news about the coronavirus each day, some of it promising and other details troubling, like so much else about the COVID-19 pandemic that has changed all of our lives. Meantime, as states are gradually opening back up again and economies are coming back to life around the country after weeks of lockdown, experts have been sharing notes of caution, warnings about the possibility of a new wave of coronavirus, and best practices about how we can all keep ourselves safe in public again.

Chris Evans says he’s done with Captain America

%name Chris Evans says he’s done with Captain America by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The main Avengers timeline will continue after Endgame without three important heroes: Black Widow, Iron Man, and the original Captain America.
  • There have been some rumors about Iron Man returning to the MCU, and fans have wondered whether Chris Evans will ever reprise his role as Captain America.
  • The actor made it clear during a recent interview that it would be too risky to revisit Steve Rogers.

Their numerous appearances entertained us for more than 10 years, but three of our favorite Marvel superheroes are out of the picture after Avengers: Endgame. Black Widow and Iron Man died, while Captain America retired in a separate timeline to finally grow old with the love of his life. Technically, Black Widow will be back for at least one more movie. Black Widow is the origin story Scarlett Johansson should have gotten years ago, but never did. Now that the movie’s finally ready, the novel coronavirus has forced Disney to postpone the launch to November. Iron Man should also have a brief cameo in the film, using old footage from other MCU movies.

But Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans aren’t expected to appear in new MCU movies going forward. There’s been recent talk recently about RDJ reprising his iconic Iron Man role, and that’s great news for fans who hope to see the actor in the suit again. But the only way for that to work would be in prequels that precede the events of Endgame. Reviving Tony Stark for movies that follow Endgame would ruin Endgame. As for Evans, the actor suggested a few months ago that he’d consider playing Steve Rogers again.

But now he’s made it clear that it’s not happening.

NASA spots piping hot batch of new sunspots, hinting at increased solar activity

  • New sunspots and solar flares on the Sun were spotted by NASA and could be an indication that we’re entering a period of increased solar activity.
  • The solar minimum, a period of low activity on the Sun, may be ending, but we won’t know for sure for a few more months.
  • Solar flares and coronal mass ejections can impact communications on Earth and even damage satellites.

Our Sun is incredibly important to our survival. We’d like to make sure it’s nice and warm and happy at all times, but our nearest star goes through a variety of moods just like everyone else. These solar cycles include times of increased activity, with sunspots and solar flares firing off regularly, to quiet stretches in which sunspots and flares are far rarer.

Just a couple of days ago, NASA helped spot a new batch of sunspots and the flares arcing above them. In a new blog post, NASA explains that the flares weren’t particularly powerful, and didn’t register with NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, but NASA’s own hardware was able to detect them. The space agency suggests that the sunspots and flares could be an indication that the star is becoming more active yet again.

  • The list of the most-watched TV shows across the major streaming services over the past week leans heavily on new titles, not so much the old favorites that are usually included on the list.
  • The list of shows from services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu reflects Americans’ desire for escapism and entertainment to counterbalance the stream of negative headlines right now.
  • Our list of the most-watched TV shows comes once again from the team at the streaming search engine service Reelgood.

I don’t know about you, but streaming entertainment is one of the few things keeping me sane right now, given how depressing the state of the country is — and, as always, our latest weekly rundown of the most-watched TV shows across the major streaming platforms reflects that desire for escapism.

To that end, it probably shouldn’t surprise me that that animated hijinks depicted in the Adult Swim series Rick and Morty were what streaming fans gravitated to the most between May 21-27. That’s according to the team at the streaming search engine service Reelgood, which each week shares with BGR a rundown of what its millions of members are watching the most via the service across both Netflix as well as the other major streamers.

New study shows remdesivir works in coronavirus therapy, but it might not be enough

%name New study shows remdesivir works in coronavirus therapy, but it might not be enough by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Data from a new coronavirus drug trial shows that a 5-day course of remdesivir therapy is more effective than standard care, and works just as well as a 10-day course.
  • The results only apply to a specific set of COVID-19 patients, namely people who developed a moderate case, which included pneumonia without reduced oxygen levels.
  • The new Phase 3 SIMPLE remdesivir study indirectly suggests the drug won’t work in severe cases, and it will not affect COVID-19 mortality rates. The results are in line with a previously published trial.

The novel coronavirus still has no cure, but doctors have devised plenty of therapies that have shown promise and are in various stages of testing. One of them is remdesivir, the drug that received Dr. Anthony Fauci’s endorsement in late April. We learned at the time that remdesivir can speed up recovery, reducing it down from 15 days with other types of care to 11 days. Fauci said at the time that the drug didn’t affect mortality rates and that remdesivir may have to be combined with different medicine to improve COVID-19 therapy.

The study was published a few weeks later, further confirming these findings, and making it clear that remdesivir isn’t the miracle COVID-19 drug we’ve been waiting for. The maker of remdesivir on Monday published an additional study on Monday that says that remdesivir works in COVID-19 therapies. However, Gilead’s Phase 3 study assessed the length of treatment, and its conclusions may only apply to a certain subset of patients.

SpaceX Crew Dragon hit a huge milestone, but it’s not done yet

%name SpaceX Crew Dragon hit a huge milestone, but it’s not done yet by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule has passed several milestones over the past few days, but it still has to complete a safe return to Earth before NASA can certify it.
  • Once Crew Dragon is certified, it can be used whenever NASA wants to send humans back and forth to the International Space Station.
  • With its own spacecraft to launch from US soil, NASA no longer has to rely on seats aboard Russian spacecraft headed for the ISS.

When SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule traveled to space atop a Falcon 9 rocket on Saturday, it was a big deal. It was an even bigger deal when the Crew Dragon docked with the International Space Station, allowing two NASA crew members to join their peers in the orbiting laboratory. Those were two huge accomplishments, but NASA has yet to actually certify Crew Dragon as being ready for regular use in space missions. It can’t do that until the spacecraft makes it back to Earth in one piece.

The final hurdle for SpaceX and Crew Dragon is a safe return to Earth with astronauts on board. Unfortunately for SpaceX, NASA hasn’t decided when that return trip will actually happen.

Wild video shows a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot crashing into a truck

  • A Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot recently crashed into a stationary truck on a highway in Taiwan.
  • The Tesla crash was captured on video
  • The Model 3 driver was uninjured.

Video released over the weekend shows a Tesla Model 3 on Autopilot crashing into a truck that had fallen on its side. The incident took place on a highway in Taiwan and footage of the crash — which was obtained via nearby security cameras — has since gone viral. The Model 3 driver, it’s worth noting, emerged unscathed, which is a testament to Tesla’s impressive safety features.

As you’ll see below, the crash video is jarring for a few reasons. For starters, the Model 3 made absolutely no effort to brake before hitting the truck. For reasons we’ll get into shortly, it appears that the Autopilot software simply didn’t recognize there was an obstacle ahead.

The 10 best movies and shows coming to Netflix in June 2020

  • Netflix is adding dozens of shows and movies to its streaming service in June, but these are the ten we think you should add to your queue this month.
  • 13 Reasons Why and F is for Family are both returning for their fourth seasons, while Queer Eye will be on its fifth. This is also the final season of the breakout hit 13 Reasons Why.
  • Eric Andre’s first stand-up special should be absolutely insane.

Over the past three months, the only topics of discussion between myself, my friends, and my family (other than the increasingly chaotic state of the planet) have been the shows and movies we’ve been watching and the music we’ve been listening to. Netflix — in addition to other streaming services — has given us something to talk about when our lives are otherwise on pause, and though June is a relatively quiet month for Netflix compared to the rest of the year so far, there are several highlights worth pointing out, which we’ve done below.

Incredible video shows SpaceX’s Starship prototype exploding

%name Incredible video shows SpaceX’s Starship prototype exploding by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • SpaceX’s Starship prototype SN4 exploded during a static fire test on Friday, just hours before the second launch attempt of the Crew Dragon.
  • The two projects are completely different and the explosion had no impact on the NASA mission.
  • Video of the explosion shows the rocket prototype spilling what appears to be oxygen shortly before the explosion destroys the vehicle.

SpaceX had an incredibly eventful weekend. Its Crew Dragon capsule traveled to the International Space Station and for the first time ever it had astronauts along for the ride. It was a huge accomplishment for SpaceX and a very big deal for NASA, which desperately wants the ability to send humans into space whenever it desires.

Unfortunately, not everything swung in SpaceX’s direction, and a test of a SpaceX Starship prototype ended in the worst possible way on Friday. A static fire test — a test of the vehicle’s propulsion system without it leaving the ground — resulted in a massive explosion and a complete loss of the prototype known as SN4.
