In a bombshell of a report, BusinessInsider is claiming that Apple is actively exploring becoming a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) both in the United States and across Europe. Much more than a theoretical plan, the report adds that Apple has already begun trialing such a service in the U.S.
What this means for end users is that Apple would effectively become a network carrier. In such a scenario, Apple would lease space from entrenched carriers and then sell it to consumers directly. So rather than paying a monthly bill to the likes of Sprint, Verizon and others, consumers would instead fork over money to Apple for an assortment of data, text, and call services.

Sorry, hitchBOT: It looks like you weren’t ready for the U.S.A. after all. hitchBOT, in case you don’t know, was a hitchhiking robot that successfully made its way across Canada, Germany and the Netherlands all thanks to the kindness of strangers who picked it up on the side of the road and took it to various destinations. You may notice we said the robot was a hitchhiker. That’s because the friendly hunk of metal only lasted two weeks hitchhiking in the United States before it was found brutally decapitated and dismembered in Philadelphia.

When I first started getting into cell phones a few centuries ago, hacking and customizing your phone was an intricate and time-consuming process that involved things like “seem editing” and flashing software to a phone that you basically had to build yourself. Count yourself lucky that you have no idea what “seem editing” is.
Today, if you have an iPhone and you want to hack it or customize it, you connect your phone to your computer and run some software that will jailbreak it in a matter of minutes — it’s that simple. And while Apple’s iOS platform is now more capable than ever so I no longer personally feel the need to jailbreak, there are some pretty awesome jailbreak tweaks out there that are definitely making me consider it again.
