‘Holmes & Watson’ was so bad that even Netflix didn’t want it

The film Holmes & Watson debuted recently to absolutely devastating reviews. Though the movie boasts a seemingly intriguing cast — with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly finally joining forces again — the vast majority of reviews so far have been atrocious and unforgiving. The movie has already been categorized as an abject failure just three days after its release. All in all, it’s quite sad that Ferrell and Reilly, who delivered an endless amount of laughs in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, were part of a movie that by all accounts is a dud for the ages.

On Rotten Tomatoes, for example, the movie has a laughably bad rating of 7%. One representative review from Rolling Stone critic David Fear notes that “it’s so painfully unfunny we’re not sure it can legally be called a comedy.” There have even been reports that the movie has prompted some audience goers to flat-out leave in the middle of the movie. All that aside, here’s how you know the film is truly bad: Netflix didn’t even want it.

Study finds rich people are generous as long as they feel like they’re in charge

The holidays are supposed to be a time for giving and, as we’ve seen in a number of instances, sometimes people with disposable income really go above and beyond to spread joy. A new study from researchers at Harvard Business School and the University of British Columbia reveals that wealthy people are indeed generous, but only if they feel like they’re in charge.

The team reached this conclusion after sending out charity donation requests to 12,000 Ivy League alumni who bring in a bare minimum of $100,000 annually. The researchers only reached out to individuals whose income figures are publicly available because of their positions with public companies, and they found that the language used in their requests was directly linked to the amount of money each alumnus was willing to donate.

Sneaky 6-year-old gets caught asking Alexa for help with math homework

According to New Jersey mom Yerelyn Cueva, her 6-year-old son Jariel’s favorite subject is math.

Okay, the kid likes numbers. Nothing unusual there. That fact, however, is also why his mom was surprised one day to hear the voice of Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa coming from another room in her house — where, upon investigating, she found Jariel hunched over a table asking Alexa to solve problems for him so he could get through his first-grade winter break math homework a little faster.

Netflix will no longer allow new customers to pay with in-app subscriptions on iOS

Whether you’re joining Netflix for the first time or returning after some time away, you will no longer be able to pay for a subscription to the streaming service through an in-app purchase on iOS. After experimenting with this big change earlier in the year by giving iOS users a way to bypass iTunes when paying for a subscription, Netflix confirmed this week that it has eliminated the ability to purchase a subscription within the iOS app altogether.

“We no longer support iTunes as a method of payment for new members,” a Netflix spokesperson told VentureBeat on Friday. Existing members will be able to continue using that method to pay for their subscription if it is currently active, though, but anyone signing up for a new subscription will be redirected.

Bentley takes a page out of Porsche’s playbook as it plans to lure over Tesla buyers

Whether you love Tesla or can’t stand the company — perhaps due to the antics of CEO Elon Musk — there’s no getting around the fact that the company may very well go down as one of the more influential car manufacturers in history.

In a relatively short time-frame, Tesla managed to bring electric cars into the mainstream. Tesla’s success has since prompted a number of luxury auto brands — from BMW to Porsche — to finally start taking EVs seriously. Just last year, for example, Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellmer flat-out said that the allure of the Model S likely lured away consumers who were otherwise interested in picking up a Porsche.

Heart failure doesn’t mean you have to stop drinking, apparently

%name Heart failure doesn’t mean you have to stop drinking, apparently by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Being diagnosed with heart failure is a serious thing, and individuals who receive such news from their doctors are likely to examine their lifestyles and, in many cases, change some of their habits. For fans of alcohol, that might mean dramatically lowering their intake or even quitting altogether.

However, a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests that regular drinkers who decide to abstain from alcohol won’t actually be improving their survival prospects. Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine found that moderate drinking even after a heart failure diagnosis doesn’t worsen the condition.

Every single person with an Apple TV should also have this $18 accessory

%name Every single person with an Apple TV should also have this $18 accessory by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

One of the reasons media streaming dongles are so popular is because they don’t take up any space. Instead, they plug into HDMI ports on the back of a TV and stay hidden while you browse and stream. Apple doesn’t make a dongle like Amazon’s Fire TV Stick and the Roku Streaming Stick, but there’s a low-cost accessory that can accomplish the same thing with the Apple TV. The TotalMount Apple TV Mount attaches to the back of your flat screen TV so you can tuck it away securely out of sight. It’s such a great accessory that it probably should’ve come with your Apple TV to begin with.

TotalMount Apple TV Mount – Compatible with all Apple TVs including Apple TV 4K: $17.99

Here are some highlights from the product page:

  • Mount for Apple TV (Apple TV and remote not included)
  • Perfect for wall-mounted televisions (Attaches Apple TV to the back of your television)
  • Compatible with all Apple TVs (including the new Apple TV 4K and the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Apple TV generations)
  • Includes many premium, patented features
  • Includes three mounting options: innovative hooks for TV vents, special adhesive for elevated TV temperatures, and screws for wall mounting

Video game industry veteran may have some great news about the PS5 and next-gen Xbox

%name Video game industry veteran may have some great news about the PS5 and next gen Xbox by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Microsoft has struggled to bring exclusive games to the Xbox One on a consistent basis since launch — one of many factors which opened the door for the PS4’s dominance — but there are still a number of ways in which the Xbox One outperforms its rivals. Chief among them is the system’s ability to play a growing selection of Xbox 360 titles through its Backward Compatibility feature, which neither the PS4 nor the Nintendo Switch possess.

But as we approach the next generation of consoles, gamers are curious about whether or not game companies will continue to prioritize access to older titles, or allow them to be played on new machines. We won’t know the answer for at least another year or so, but at least one game industry veteran believes they will.
