Porsche Announces New 4-Cylinder Boxer Engine

Porsche’s decision to develop a new four-cylinder engine stems from its need to improve fuel efficiency and emissions ratings across its model line.

The new engine will come standard in the Boxster and Cayman models. There has been talk of a four-cylinder 911, but that’s rather unlikely.

The new engine features a horizontally opposed, “boxer” engine, denoting a flat configuration where the pistons move synchronously in and out, as opposed to in an alternating rhythm. For a displacement, we’ve heard 2.5 liters thrown around as the magic number, but that may be subject to change.

Expect the new engine to come in either direct injected or turbocharged variants. Engine output would probably max at around 395 hp, which is higher than the current output of even the most powerful Boxster and Cayman model variants.

There has also been talk that an entire new family of flat four engines will be developed. The 2.5L variant mentioned above would be the most powerful, but 1.6L and 2.0L variants are also reportedly in the early stages of design. A 1.6L variant would put out 210 hp, the 2.0 would produce 286 hp, while the aforementioned 2.5L would have a base output of 360 hp.

Since the next generation of Cayman and Boxster aren’t due for quite some time, it’ll be at least near the end of the decade by the time this engine sees production, unless the engine appears in the face-lifted versions due to be released in 2016; this is possible but less likely.

Porsche also employs a 2.0L straight four in its upcoming Macan crossover, but that one isn’t anywhere near as powerful or as advanced in terms of efficiency.

The ST school is about more than just handbrake turns, hot laps, and sliding into parking spaces.

I felt like such a rock star. On my second pass around the UrbanCross course (read: fancy autocross) at the Ford ST Octane Academy, I absolutely nailed the exit, sliding the bright-yellow Focus ST sideways into a box the size of a parking space, all four wheels in line.

This was just one of many bits of hooliganism learned during my day at the Academy – a school offered to any Ford Focus ST or Fiesta ST owner, free of charge. This one-day course, with an optional second day, teaches not only the basics of on-track driving, but lets owners experience all of the hilariously fun bits of hot hatchery built into these little turbocharged wonders.

Did I mention it’s free? All you have to do is get there, with “there” being Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT.

As I would come to learn during my time in Tooele (that’s “too-illuh”), the ST school is about more than just handbrake turns, hot laps and heroic slides into parking spaces. Mixed in with all of the antics was a crash course on understanding car control, along with simple tools that’ll help you be a better driver in everyday situations. And man, was it fun.

Has the 2015 Ford Mustang gained hundreds of pounds?

steeda mustang Has the 2015 Ford Mustang gained hundreds of pounds? by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Filed under:

Automakers face competing interests when it comes to developing a new generation of vehicle. On the one hand, companies want to build their cars to be safer and better handling, with more equipment and maybe even larger dimensions over the model it’s replacing. On the other hand, they strive to keep weight down to the benefit of both performance and fuel consumption. Usually something has to give, and in the case of the new 2015 Ford Mustang, those efforts may have resulted in a weight penalty of two or three hundred pounds.

This according to Blue Oval modifier Steeda Autosports, which states that “the 2015 Mustang ended up gaining 200-300 pounds (90-140 kilos) in this remake”. Despite the Mustang not being on the market yet, it would appear the leading Ford aftermarketer has been given early access to the 2015 model to help jumpstart its tuning efforts (a rather common development among trusted tuners). If Steeda’s assertion is accurate, that would make the challenge of getting the new pony car up to speed for both Ford and aftermarket customizers like Steeda that much greater.

We’re waiting for official word from Ford on the veracity of Steeda’s claim, but if true, it’s bound to be a bit of disappointing news for legions of Blue Oval performance enthusiasts. Watch this space for more.

2015 Ford Mustang’s curb weight appears to be anyone’s guess

ford mustang 3 1 2015 Ford Mustangs curb weight appears to be anyones guess by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Ford Mustang enthusiasts rejoiced when they first learned that the all-new sixth-generation model would feature a fully independent rear suspension (IRS) and the option of a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder in addition to its naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 offerings. Yet some of that excitement has been suppressed with a growing concern about the upcoming coupe’s curb weight – Ford has released plenty of information about the vehicle, but it has kept absolutely silent about its mass.

After many of us speculated that the new model would shed some weight, after all, we all know that excess poundage is the enemy of performance and “lightweighting” is the engineering buzzword of the moment. However, our story last week contradicted that logic when Steeda Autosports, a company that has been given early access to the new model, stated on its website that “the 2015 Mustang ended up gaining 200-300 pounds in this remake.” The report had enthusiasts audibly squirming in pain.

But it now appears that Steeda’s statements may have been anything but scientific. The company, seemingly in a backpedal, clarified itself on Mustang6g.com today, saying: “Based on our experience working with IRS Mustangs in the past we estimated what the weight addition will be. In addition current industry trends with new cars show additional weight being added for various new safety and comfort features.”

Steeda Autosport’s well-publicized guess, as frustrating as it is, doesn’t bother us as much as the Blue Oval’s silence on the matter – is the automaker holding off on releasing bad news, or is it planning a pleasant surprise? We have tried contacting numerous sources at the automaker, and for the moment, mum’s the word.

As it stands today, only one company knows the true curb weight of the sixth-generation model. So Ford, how much does the 2015 Mustang weigh?

Speedway Motors Founder “Speedy” Bill Smith Dead at 84

Bill Smith 285x300 Speedway Motors Founder “Speedy” Bill Smith Dead at 84 by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley

Victory Lane fell silent this weekend as the performance automotive community lost a pioneering racer, hot rodder and entrepreneur. “Speedy” Bill Smith, founder and owner of Speedway Motors, died May 30 at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska just weeks before his 85th birthday. He is survived by four sons, their wives, ten grandchildren, and an extended family of Speedway Motors employees and thousands of loyal customers.

A Lincoln, Nebraska native, Smith got hooked on cars early in life and began buying, fixing and selling Model Ts for profit as a teen. Soon he was racing – first motorcycles, then cars – while attending classes at Nebraska Wesleyan University. After earning a degree in education, Smith followed his automotive passion and opened Speedway Motors in 1952, aided by a $300 loan from his wife Joyce.

A combination of passion, tenacity and innovation allowed Smith to grow a small 20×20 storefront into a flourishing mail-order business and manufacturing empire. During its 62 years in business, Speedway Motors has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers, distributors and retailers in the performance aftermarket. Working side-by-side with his beloved wife and all four sons, Smith built what is recognized as America’s Oldest Speed Shop.

Smith’s countless contributions to rodding and racing have been recognized by dozens of organizations, with Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement honors coming from the likes of SEMA, NSRA, Goodguys, IMCA and USAC. He actively supported organizations and sanctioning bodies that shared his mission to make rodding and racing safe, fun and affordable.

A desire to preserve racing history led “Speedy” Bill, his wife Joyce and their sons to establish the Museum of American Speed in 1992. This world-class collection of racing engines, cars and automotive artifacts has allowed the Smith family to give back to the automotive community and share their profound love of racing and rodding with future generations.
