NASA’s coronavirus ventilator is going into production

  • NASA’s coronavirus ventilator called VITAL was announced back in April, but it’ll finally enter production thanks to eight manufacturing partners.
  • The eight US companies are located in a number of different states and were selected from a pool of over 100 applications.
  • A modified version of the VITAL ventilator that uses compressed air is currently under review with the FDA.

Back in April, in the heart of the coronavirus pandemic, NASA stepped up to help by developing a ventilator specifically designed for COVID-19 patients. The device was nicknamed VITAL (short for Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally) and it was meant to be a low-cost, easy-to-build piece of life-saving medical hardware. Now, as the pandemic continues to rage on, the space agency has announced the companies that have been chosen to manufacture the VITAL ventilators.

In a new blog post, NASA reveals that over 100 companies submitted applications to be chosen as manufacturers for VITAL. After narrowing down the dozens of options, the Office of Technology and Corporate Partnerships at Caltech, which manages NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and holds the patents on VITAL, selected a total of eight companies as manufacturing partners.

Facebook finally made it easier to delete all of your old posts

  • Facebook just introduced a new feature that makes it easier to archive or delete old posts.
  • The Manage Activity feature lets Facebook users manage everything they’ve ever posted on Facebook and sort all of their posts to find exactly what they’re looking for.
  • Manage Activity will be available on mobile first, and then desktop and Facebook Lite.

Facebook, for all of its innumerable flaws, is a platform billions of people all around the world use to stay in touch with one another and share moments of their lives with friends and family members. But chances are that if you have been using Facebook since you were young (or you’ve just had an account for a while), there are posts you wouldn’t want potential employers to see or you would simply like to have stricken from the record.

Purging a Facebook account that has existed for months or years has never been especially easy, but this Tuesday, Facebook introduced a new tool called Manage Activity that greatly simplifies the process of removing old posts from your profile. Facebook says that whether you’re graduating or going through a breakup, it wants “to make it easy for you to curate your presence on Facebook to more accurately reflect who you are today.”

Fauci just criticized vaccine maker Moderna for doing the same thing he did

%name Fauci just criticized vaccine maker Moderna for doing the same thing he did by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The first novel coronavirus vaccine that reached human trials in the US comes from Moderna. It’s an mRNA drug that shows promise, according to an announcement from the company that delivered partial results.
  • Moderna’s coronavirus drug announcement was incomplete and prompted some criticism from scientists who wanted access to the full data set.
  • Dr. Anthony Fauci just expressed his own dissatisfaction at seeing Moderna’s press release but reiterated his conviction that the treatment is promising.
  • Fauci did the same thing himself a few weeks ago when he released preliminary results about remdesivir without waiting for the full study to be ready.

When Dr. Anthony Fauci announced the promising results of a massive remdesivir trial that the National Institutes of Health conducted, he did so without waiting for the proper research to be published in a medical journal. The remdesivir study results weren’t published until several weeks later, delivering the same conclusions Fauci offered from the White House in late April. But Fauci is now unhappy with vaccine maker Moderna for the way it announced promising results for what could end up being one of the first vaccines for the novel coronavirus.

Here’s what NASA astronauts are saying about SpaceX’s Crew Dragon

%name Here’s what NASA astronauts are saying about SpaceX’s Crew Dragon by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • NASA astronauts dish on the Crew Dragon ride to the International Space Station, including how it felt compared to the Space Shuttle.
  • Astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken said the spacecraft worked well and ISS commander Chris Cassidy said it was like a new car.
  • The astronauts will remain in space for up to several months.

By now you’ve seen the history-making SpaceX/NASA launch of the Crew Dragon, but views from the outside of the spacecraft as it cruised skyward don’t offer a clue as to what it felt like for the astronauts who were actually inside it. In an interview with reporters on Monday, astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken were happy to share their experience as the first humans to travel into space in SpaceX’s shiny new spacecraft.

So what was it like? Apparently pretty nice, according to the two men, and it even had the classic “new car smell,” according to Chris Cassidy, the current commander of the International Space Station.

The Air Force has a bomb detector that can sniff out life-threatening coronavirus cases

%name The Air Force has a bomb detector that can sniff out life threatening coronavirus cases by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • Early detection of severe coronavirus symptoms could help doctors better prepare therapies for patients at risk of developing respiratory complications.
  • The Air Force Research Laboratory has been working on repurposing a device for COVID-19, a chemical sensing device that can detect bombs and other dangerous substances by analyzing the air in a room.
  • This breathalyzer-like device might be able to deliver early alerts for life-threatening complications like ARDS that is often associated with COVID-19 deaths.

One of the problems with the novel coronavirus is that some people will experience a more severe case of the disease, especially the elderly and people suffering from other medical conditions. This typically involves respiratory issues that may require oxygen therapy including invasive ventilation, and can often lead to death. Incidentally, that’s why coronavirus testing is so important. The earlier you diagnose COVID-19, the faster you can begin treating it.

Doctors studying the COVID-19 pathology have already found ways to reduce the risk of complications. They are testing methods that could offer ways to predict which patients might be prone to developing severe respiratory issues. Physicians in the UK are testing a T-cell program that can help them predict severe cases and provide effective treatment. Separately, researchers from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) think they can repurpose a tool made for bomb detection to identify chemical substances indicative of severe COVID-19 complications.

Insane video shows LA cops interrupting live news and handcuffing the wrong people

%name Insane video shows LA cops interrupting live news and handcuffing the wrong people by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • For yet another night in the US, police protests have continued as countless Americans marched, demonstrated, and rioted in anger stemming from the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.
  • On Monday night, a TV news crew in LA showed how quickly things can go wrong.
  • Footage captured by the crew shows LA police rolling up to a business, whose owners had just appeared to run off a group of looters, and proceed to put them up against the wall on live TV.

It’s been an extraordinary 72-hours or so in America, with journalists and social media documenting in unsettling, dramatic, and historic detail the unrest that’s consumed the country since the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police last week. Police protests, demonstrations, and outright riots have been multiplying and escalating around the country.

On Monday night, meanwhile, I saw one of the most surreal things ever captured by a television news crew — in this case, a TV news crew from the LA neighborhood of Van Nuys. You can watch it via the tweet below from Los Angeles Times sports columnist Arash Markazi, and what it shows is the aforementioned news crew documenting what appears to be a standoff between armed business owners who are trying to dissuade what purport to be looters. As the crew continues to film, the cops eventually roll up, having been waved down for help in protecting the business. But it got surreal from there.

That’s why you have multiple Echo smart speakers strategically placed throughout your home, so that you can speak a command or ask a question and no matter where you are, Alexa will get to work.

You’ll find two USB ports to plug in your mobile devices and there are also a bunch of additional features that Anker offers on some of its other car charger models. But the real reason to pick up a Roav Viva is Alexa. Just like the Echo Dot in your home, the Roav Viva allows you so speak commands or questions and get hands-free access to Alexa.

Whether you need an answer to a pressing question like “Hey Alexa, what’s the official bird of Louisiana?” or you want to tell Alexa to make sure the lights in your bedroom at home are turned off or ensure the garage door is closed, the Roav Viva has you covered. And yes, you can indeed use Alexa to open and close your garage if you have a device like the Nexx NXG-200 or the MyQ, though a monthly subscription is required to use Alexa with the MyQ.

New coronavirus stimulus plan would pay you $1,200 to go to work

%name New coronavirus stimulus plan would pay you $1,200 to go to work by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • The coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing in the US, the health-related toll from which is continuing to climb even as it continues to exact a terrible cost to the US economy.
  • Congress is continuing to debate new proposals that could include the possibility of another round of coronavirus stimulus checks.
  • One Republican lawmaker has come up with a new idea that would pay people $1,200 to return to work.

Not that anyone needs a reminder, but for all practical purposes there are pretty much just two news stories that matter in the US right now. One of them is the social unrest taking place around the country related to the protests inspired by George Floyd, excessive use of force by police and the Black Lives Matter movement. The other, in case you forgot, is the coronavirus pandemic and all of the forces, response, and storylines stemming from it — including the government response to the virus that, to date, has infected more than 1.8 million people in the US and resulted in more than 105,000 reported deaths here. That’s according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.

There continues to be chatter, proposals floated, and a general sense that Congress should do something as it relates to a follow-up coronavirus stimulus package. A new report from the Congressional Budget Office Monday gave some new urgency to this, predicting that the coronavirus will erase almost $8 trillion from the US economy over the next decade. Accordingly, yet another new stimulus proposal has emerged that would offer people another $1,200 — but there’s a catch.

  • Prime Day 2020 is postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but Prime Day pricing still arrived on time for Sony’s wildly popular active noise cancelling headphones.
  • The class-leading Sony WH1000XM3 wireless ANC headphones are back down to Prime Day’s price from last year, as are the more affordable Sony WHXB900N headphones.
  • If you want noise cancelling headphones that cost far less but aren’t made by Sony, we’ve got another great sale to tell you about as well.

If 2020 was a normal year, we would all be gearing up for the biggest shopping event of the season right now. We’re talking about Prime Day 2020, of course, which has been postponed until sometime in September. With the novel coronavirus pandemic still wreaking havoc in regions all across the United States and around the world, this wouldn’t exactly be an appropriate time to host a massive sales event. That’s especially true when you consider that more than 40 million Americans are unemployed at the moment since so many nonessential businesses have been forced to close.

It will be quite some time before things really start getting back to normal, and that’s especially true if you consider the fact that many hard-hit cities and states are in the process of reopening their economies WAY too soon, and coronavirus infections are already beginning to spike again. Have we learned nothing from the events of the past few months?! Oh well, just make sure you stock up on best-selling face masks and hand sanitizer while you can.

Many bargain hunters are still a bit upset that Prime Day is postponed despite everything that’s going on, but we do have some good news for you. The Sony WH1000XM3 wireless ANC headphones that are best-sellers each and every year on Prime Day and Black Friday are currently on sale, and they’re down to their Prime Day price of just $278 instead of $350! More affordable Sony WHXB900N headphones are on sale as well, so you can snag them for $178 instead of $250. And last but certainly not least, if you want a much more affordable option and you’re not tied to Sony, the incredibly popular Cowin E7 wireless ANC headphones with more than 19,000 5-star ratings are down to just $49.99 thanks to a discount and an extra $10 coupon you can clip.

All three of these headphones are fantastic options, so definitely check them out while they’re discounted.

Dr. Fauci says Trump isn’t even going to coronavirus meetings anymore

%name Dr. Fauci says Trump isn’t even going to coronavirus meetings anymore by Authcom, Nova Scotia\s Internet and Computing Solutions Provider in Kentville, Annapolis Valley
  • In recent interviews, White House Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci revealed that it has been weeks since he has spoken to President Trump.
  • Dr. Fauci says the task force meets infrequently and yet Trump is no longer attending.
  • Despite the silence from the rest of the task force, Dr. Fauci has continued to speak to the press.

Our priorities in the United States have shifted dramatically over the past week.

Following the killing of George Floyd by a police officer — who has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter — protestors have been marching through the streets from coast to coast, demanding justice for Floyd and an end to police brutality. All the while, the novel coronavirus pandemic has taken a backseat, but even as several states are flattening the curve and mitigating the spread of the virus, it’s unclear what effect these mass gatherings will have on the infection rate in the days and weeks to come.

Whether or not the protests lead to a rise in the infection rate, there are still over 10,000 positive cases being reported every day in the United States, and yet the White House Coronavirus Task Force has seemingly dissolved. There was also a period where we didn’t hear from National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director and task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci, but he has finally reemerged with some troubling news.
