It’s now been several months since Chinese scientist He Jiankui revealed that he had successfully edited the genes of human embryos, which were then carried to term, resulting in the first genetically modified humans. His work was quickly shunned by all corners of the scientific community, and his fate remains unknown.

Last week, a large group of geneticists and researchers called for a moratorium on genetic editing until a robust regulatory framework could be established. Now, the World Health Organization is weighing in, and while it stops short of suggesting a prohibition on current genetics work, the group makes it clear that it supports regulations and oversight in genome editing.

It’s been said that war makes strange bedfellows, and now we can say the same thing about the out-of-control problem of robocalls and spam calls that bombard all of our phones day-in, day-out. Normally, AT&T and Comcast are competing telecommunications giants, but in the case of the anti-robocall fight, they’ve come together to announce what may be a first-of-its-kind triumph — the ability to authenticate calls made across both companies’ networks.

That paves the way for both AT&T and Comcast to start offering call authentication between the two networks to customers later this year. Letting customers, in other words, see verified calls not only when they originate from within their network but also from outside it.

It’s certainly been a big week for gaming news, with the unveiling of Google’s forthcoming Stadia game streaming service as well as related announcements like new Google gaming hardware and the promise of exclusive games for the service. In related news, Microsoft’s gaming vice president Phil Spencer sent out an email to employees today promising that Microsoft would “go big” at E3 in the wake of Google’s news, while Nintendo today as part of GDC announced a wave of new indie games coming to the Switch.

Speaking of the Switch, consoles certainly aren’t going anywhere for at least a little while longer, never mind the rush of tech giants like Google to launch game streaming offerings that try and eliminate the need for a console altogether. To get a sense of where consumer tastes are at relative to consoles, PCMag conducted a survey of consumers that generated some interesting results.

Building a robotic vehicle that will eventually travel to another planet is a complicated undertaking. With just one NASA rover, Curiosity, currently roaming around on Mars after the death of Opportunity, the much-hyped Mars 2020 mission takes on even more significance.

Getting it right means testing, tweaking, testing, tweaking, and then testing some more, and NASA just published a new behind-the-scenes look at the intense trial process the rover’s on-board computers have to endure. Tucked away inside a cleanroom at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Spacecraft Assembly Facility, the 2020 mission’s hardware was tasked with landing on a simulated Martian surface that exists only in the spacecraft’s complex computer brain.

I’ll never use my AirPods again without silicone covers. Apple managed to pack shockingly good sound quality into its tiny cord-free earbuds, but you would never know because all the bass leaks out thanks to the smooth plastic tips. With silicone covers on them, however, they actually create a good seal in your ear and lock in all that deep bass. The problem, of course, is that AirPods don’t fit in the charging case while they have silicone covers on them. At least, that’s usually the problem. Amazon on Wednesday rolled out an updated version of its Kindle e-reader, giving the entry-level version of the tablet a small price bump and adding a front light to it — making this the first Kindle with a front light you can get your hands on for less than $100.

At that price, it no doubt sounds like quite a steal, though there are a few key points to be aware of. This $89.99 version of the device includes the screen saver ads you’ll have to accept, unless you want to pay more for a version of the Kindle without them. Amazon says this version of the Kindle also include updated electronic ink technology for better contrast, in addition to a six-inch, 167 PPI capacitive touch display.
